I saw the show last week and really did not enjoy it at all.

I'm 24 and can deal with concert-level decibels but I felt like I was being assaulted. Evidently it isn't as bad under the mezzanine's overhang but I was going positively deaf in the front mezz.

I did not enjoy the score save for a few songs that truly stuck out and didn't come until later in the show. It's sad when the most engaging and affecting songs aren't even sung by the shows main characters. I didn't seem to be alone in not enjoying the show as the audience reception was lukewarm at best and my ass felt glued to my seat at curtain call, as did the entire audience.

Had I been in a black-box theater in Williamsburg with plenty of available beer in the vicinity I might have felt a little warmer toward the show but I was otherwise unimpressed. I see where the intent is and the snarky, in-your-face, sarcastic and farcical look at history could have worked but I felt it lacked depth and stayed on one level the entire time without deviating which never made me care for any of the characters or the arc of the story in the least.

I'm officially with LuPone on this one:

"Bono fills arenas. Elton John fills arenas. Why are you writing a Broadway musical? [Laughs.] Having said that, there’s room for all of us, but I am sick and tired of going into a theater and being blasted out of my seat because somebody thinks I can’t hear, and seeing a spectacle that is not theatrical in any way, shape or form."

"Forget the age thing already!"

Many people stay vital and open well into their elderstateshood, including most of my friends. Roxy, alas, has crossed a generational divide that need not even exist anymore. There are some things that are just not FOR him, but he insists on seeing them in order to dismiss them. What's funny is how childish, tween-like really, this dismissal is. It's "boring." Really? "Yeah, it's borrrrrrring." Anything else about it? "No, it's borrrrrrrrring." Anything about the parallels it makes about contemporary politics? No it's borrrrrrring.
