I may be in the minority here but I was not that overwhelmed by the show - Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
The best thing was the way the theater is adorned including the suspended dead horse. To me the show is a mish mash.I had intended to get the cd thru Amazon but after hearing the music decided against it.The performers are good but the Cliff Notes version of his life left me cold. The score did not help
It is mildly diverting but nowhere need Best Musical material. Anyone else feel the same? Did get great TDF seats though .

I, for one, am shocked you did not like it.
Ditto, Roxie. I thought the same thing when I saw it off-Broadway last year.

Not all shows are for all people. Maybe people about two to six demographic categories down from Mr Roxy are the target for BBAJ and Saturday Night Live.
The book is weak, but the score stands on its own pretty well. The OBCR is actually quite listenable by itself. I still think it's a better musical than any that opened on Broadway last year, but with all the strong shows opening this year I think it'll be interesting if it gets a nomination.
I would not hint about a lack of intelligence NAMO
I would hazard a guess that a tree stump or a fresh dump has more on the ball than you. Have a nice day though.

I wasn't hinting about lack of intelligence. I don't know if THAT makes you feel dumb or not, but my point is you are too OLD for an emo-rock musical.
I remember seeing this Off-Broadway and loving it. The energy, the performances, and the staging all worked for me. Then I previewed the cast recording online and hated most of the lyrics. The music was solid, but the lyrics weren't too hot. I can playback "Populism" in my head, but I can guarantee you I'm blocking out all but the chorus when I do.
For me, it just seems like a score that doesn't work as well outside of the theater. That's not a bad thing, especially since it's designed to be seen, not heard. Being able to enjoy the music at home is a bonus and a luxury. BBAJ can join other shows like Caroline, or Change that don't get their full point across without the book and staging.
Age does play a factor in it Roxy. I go to the theatre a lot and there are tons of musicals that would normally attract, let's say, a college age audience but when it comes to the little old ladies who come to the theatre every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork, they aren't as happy with what they are seeing.
I don't think that there is anything wrong with seeing an elderly couple at a rock musical and thinking off the bat that they wouldn't like it.
Hell, I was at American Idiot a week or so ago and while I was waiting for the doors to the theatre to open up, I did see an elderly couple waiting in the lobby with me.
Well....the age remarks are ridiculous. I'm going to guess I'm closer to Mr. Roxy's age than to the age of most of the rest of this board.
I LOVED BBAJ, not as one of the best shows ever...but for what it is, what I learned, what it spurned me to go on continuing to learn and for its entertainment value. Saw it 2x off b'way and once ON.
I've loved some "young shows" -- like BBAJ and Spring Awakening, and despised others (Rent) and been neutral about others (American Idiot). It really depends on how it speaks to you, more so than any age. And honestly, a show NEEDS to speak to more than an age group or it really isn't any good.
I never said it did. Unfortunately, NAMO cannot speak to me like a human being so I now have to respond in kind.
Although I am 64, there are things that a younger crowd may like that I do & some I do not. BBAJ simply did not do it for me. I like Wildhorn but realize I am in the minority. My wife was never a Sondheim fan but after seeing the current production of ALNM with its current cast she is a convert. Even though we saw the last revival of Follies, we look forward to seeing the upcoming one.
I like many kinds of diverse theater but BBAJ was not our cup of tea.

If a show's decibel level is equal to or greater than the top ticket price, it's an auto-no for Roxy.
Won't stop him from seeing it and bitching about it.
Now that you mentioned it, Namo, I'm pretty sure Eddie Murphy could bring Gilda Radner and Chris Farley back from the dead and do a More Cowbell sketch and Roxy would still say "feh".
I didn't think Namo said anything offensive.
Read between the lines. He previously called me a douchebag. After that , I gave up on him.
He does not like me .I tried offering an olive branch many times to no avail. He wants it this way & he will get it back in kind.
Roxy, have you seen ELF yet? I hear it is adorable!
Nope
Truth be told I never saw the movie. I see it turn up on TDF . My wife & I took a vacation week after Christmas so that will be our week in the city & we will probably see it than.

I'm really quite surprised at the comments about the score not standing on it's own. I haven't seen the show, but I've listened to the cast recordings many times. Granted, the first time through my response was "that's it?" but I've since grown to love it.
The music is a fun satire of politics (both then and now) with the added punch of parodying emo music. Maybe it's just that I'm the target audience for the show, but I think the songs are near perfect in what they set out to do.
I've been listening to the CD. I think the lyrics are pretty idiotic, but I'll give the show a try anyway.

Thank you drama. Roxy sees things that aren't there. Like many elderly people.
Who knew one crack would cut Roxy so to the quick and be something he'd never forget? I wonder if he remembers what douchebaggy thing he said before I called him that?

Forget the age thing already! I'm in my 50s and liked American Idiot more than my daughter; then again, Billie Joe is closer to my age than hers. I liked Bloody Bloody just fine at the Public but my experience kind of went like this: first half hour, I'm blown away, second half hour, it's still pretty good; and after that, I'm wondering how much longer they are going to go with the joke. Which tells me that as a short, off-Broadway piece, it rocks...and on Broadway at those prices, not so much.
haven't seen the transfer to broadway yet and i'm only interested in seeing if it Bloody improved. not going to give my hopes up though. i'm beginning to think that emo-rock should be renamed to "Short Attention Span Theater"
