Weird take on Side by Side...

BRILLIANT!!!
Once again Donmar makes it happen in a new and spectacular way.
That production is so weird. And totally fascinating.
Is this the Adrian Lester version? I can't open the link...
Yes.

Great production....the Donmar had a superb series of Sondheim shows...Company, Merrily, Into the Woods, Pacific Overtures..and showed that a tiny theatre can have assigned seats (now if the Menier could note that!)
Adrian Lester was my first (and best) Anthony in the NT Sweeney
Sorry if this is a bit West End board!
Did he sound like Kermit in Sweeney, too?
I'm sorry, he's a fantastic actor, but I just can't deal with that voice!
shame on you for saying such things!!!!
I really like his voice.
The Donmar Company was broadcast on BBC TV (where the Youtube clip came from. Has any one ever seen a DVD of this recording?
Wow! I actually kinda like the London cd, and now will hear THIS every time. (You're sooooo right.)
For the record, I do enjoy Kermit. Just not singing Sondheim.

Raul has some Kermit moments on the revival recording, bless his heart.
I listened to the Lester version on the plane to Europe this summer, and I actually laughed out loud at his voice.
Fromage - Raul can dance :-P

I just don't see how it helps the story any.
Hah. "I MEAN IT when I say my life is totally prepared for a gigantic change, right now!" on the revival recording completely reminds me of a Muppet.
I think the coke thing is kind of similar to the constant, incessant drinking in the 2006 revival. It's another way of externalizing what's going on in Bobby's head.

Well, at least Lester makes it clear why Bobby is single.
I didn't particularly like his voice either at that time, but in his defence I saw him at the 30th anniversary performance of Side by Side by Sondheim a couple of years ago and his voice had matured enormously. Then his Being Alive was much more full blooded and/but traditional.
After listening to three or four clips of this production, I don't like it. Does anyone in this cast have a decent singing voice? Are they trying to sound like New Yorkers? Not my cup of tea.
Their voices aren't the best and their accents ruin the songs sometimes but I like the production for the risks it took and how it tried to emphasize the really depressing grittiness of the show, it's like the black sheep of Company recordings/productions.
And Sheila Gish really stands out as Joanne...though not for the best reason most of the time.
