Bombay Dreams

Posted: 8/12/04 at 2:36amI heard a horrifying roumor from an unreliable source that BOMBAY DREMAS will close. Does anyone else have any information. This cannot happen. It's an Andrew Lloyd Webber production. His shows never close. They run through the end of eternity. Hadn't CATS been playing since the 19th century?

Posted: 8/12/04 at 9:29amok someone fess up. who the hell is buying tickets for this? they're averaging between 55 and 60% attendance each week, so it must be somebody. and i'd like to know how it's stayed open so long with those numbers. i would imagine the overhead is pretty high. the only explanation I can think of is that ALW must be throwing some heavy pocket change into keeping it around. also, ALW is the producer for it, he did not write the music. if anything, he can give Rosie a run for her money if they ever add a Tony Award for "Biggest Waste of Money by a Celebrity Turned Producer"

Posted: 8/12/04 at 10:58pmOh it really is the definition of cheesy but at least its not boring.

Posted: 8/12/04 at 11:06pmBombay Dreams...its just a laughable premise to begin with. Shakalaka Baby makes me laugh its so bad...sorry, but thats my opinion.

i think everyone just assumed it was on its way out and stopped talking about it. I almost never see it mentioned on the theatre news sites, and it's only mentioned on this board in the context of "well at least [insert show] was better than Bombay Dreams!"
these producers need to learn that a hit show in London isn't necessarily going to work in New York. there's definitely a market for Bombay Dreams and We Will Rock You somewhere in the U.S. but probably more along the lines of Vegas. Bombay Dreams would do well in San Francisco. there's a huge Indian population here, and they are underrepresented in musical theatre. Blockbuster even has a Bollywood section.

But the thing is, the Indian audiences love it. When I was there it was mostly Indian people and they were cheering and loving it.
It made me think that the reason I didnt like it that much was actually because I didn't know anything about Bollywood going in.
