Bombay Dreams — Page 2

As a concept, it's totally interesting. But the storyline is so flat, that it's not working. You get a better musical by watching an actual Bollywood movie than you do with Bombay Dreams.

Are they coming out with a cast recording?

I had a fun time seeing Bombay Dreams. It's not bad at all. I was pleasantly surprised. I think I wrote this once before somewhere.

If you truly think this is the best thing on Broadway then Broadway is, in fact, DEAD. It is the worst of Lloyd Webber...no meat...all fluff and glitz...as a friend of mine calls it 'shakalahka****'

I saw it this week and went in with an open mind. I didn't hate it, but it is one of the very few shows that I did not leave the theater and say "that was great, or that was a fantastic piece of theater or I loved it." I love almost anything in theater. This was impossible to love, almost impossible to like at all. It was 'okay' at best. I felt like it was thrown together in a week and they said, "Ok. Let's open." The book seemed like it was written by a twelve year old. The lead, Akaasha ( I don't know the actors' names unfortunately) was very, very charismatic from the second he stepped on stage. I think he was a very talented singer and dancer and he made me want to watch him. But, I thought he sounded as though he was reading off cue cards.. but, I believe that is because the script is so laughable and ridiculous that there is no way to legitimately act it and make it sound at all plausible and at all like real conversation. I felt like I was watching a junior high production of something if you go by the acting/speaking/script. Or a B Movie on USA from 1981.
If they spent another week or two (lol) working on that script, they could have made the characters seem the least bit believable.. especially that Sweetie character.. now here could have been something that had depth and moved me, but the way the whole thing is written, that character is about as deep as a pimple. There was a hint of a real character there, and a real actor attempting to act, but the character and actor are drowned out and are out of place amid the laughable rest of the what is going on on that stage.
Some of the music was just eh, but some of it was great. I am still singing shakalaka baby under my breath 3 days later. Salem Bombay had me wanting to get up and dance. The dancing was pretty good, but I felt like it was a little too MTV videoish. Turn off the music and replace it with a Britney Spears song and it'd work the same almost. But, some of the dancing was fresh.

I was wondering if they were on serious drugs when they wrote this, I am amazed the actors can do this show without dying of laughter at just how very bad some of the script is.

If they would have rewritten the book and made it a lot better, and decided that we should be able to take the story at least somewhat seriously- not just have filler between the songs- and created some actual character development, it could have been a decent show. Take Miss Saigon, for example, if that book had been as ridiculously loose as this was, it would have been a laughable mess as well. But, the authors found a way to convey the story emotionally to the audience. The authors of Bombay Dreams really failed at that miserably.

At best, it was cute, but other than the big elaborate sets complete with shooting fountain, *some* of the score, fancy choreography and a talented cast wasted in this drivel, there is no way this show is Broadway worthy whatsoever. And, those elements do not make a real Broadway show in themselves. You actually need a decent show with a real book somewhere in there.

I'd love to see the actors who are Bombay Dreams in another show, a real show.
The kid was really awesome by the way.
