"So any movie without white people that wins an award does so because the academy wants to appear to be ethnically diverse?"
Some people love to pull the race card when it comes to minorities winning awards, it really gets annoying.

The same people say CRASH beat Brokeback Mountain because the Academy is afraid to offend African-Americans, but hates gays.

Yeah, they're saying that's why Milk didn't win, as well.
Yea, a revival of Bombay Dreams!
There is life after Bombay Dreams
"It doesn't fill me with the emotions that "Jai Ho" does."
Really? The song is just so terribly chessy. Bruce Springsteen wrote an incredible song this year for "the Wrestler"...why the hell wasn't that nominated instead of this drivel?
First of all, the Academy did not do itself proudly by this year's nominations. We all know this. Snubbing Bruce, snubbing both THE DARK KNIGHT and WALL-E for Best Picture... the whole list was one giant "F/// OFF!!!" to the general public.
But don't worry: they will pay for it. Studios are already discovering that it's no longer any good to make a movie specifically because it could win an Oscar. Because, frankly, nothing's certain anymore.
Second, "Jai Ho" was, to me, the best song of the list. Because the list did not include Bruce.
Third, if there's one Golden Rule of the Academy, it is this: the voters will vote for who they want to win, unless you give them a really good reason not to. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE had won ALMOST EVERY SINGLE AWARD up to the Oscars, and, frankly, people were getting bored with the streak it was on. And if the Academy hadn't genuinly loved SLUMDOG as much as it did, it would not have won. Period.
(If there's a second Golden Rule, it's this: the voters DO NOT LIKE being told who to vote for. Heath Ledger is the exception that proves the rule.)
And fourth, Mr. FlyingMonkey - that song from CRASH did not win. "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" won. Strange that you didn't put two and two together on that one.
The Best Song nominees for the last few years have been absolutely forgettable.
BustopherPhantom, I think you totally missed the mark when you forget that the only animated film to be nominated for best picture was Beauty And The Beast in '91 and that lost out to Silence Of The Lambs. So, given that information, the odds of Wall-E getting the nomination for best picture were kind of slim.
Winston... YOU completely missed the point of his post.
Well, bustopher, when you say:
" the whole list was one giant "F/// OFF!!!" to the general public."
....you remind us that this isn't the People's Choice awards - and even though it often fails, it is meant to be recognition of the best work done during the previous year. I think the Academy deserves a lot of credit for recognizing Richard Jenkins, Ms. Leo, and several other undeservedly obscure people working in film. I'm sure the ratings last night would have been much higher if THE DARK KNIGHT had been nominated ( and I think it deserved to be) but the point is that the Academy obviously went with what its membership felt were the quality efforts in 2008 and refused to be dicatated to by box office receipts.

Play Esq.: It's supposed to be cheesy--it's a Bollywood dance number.
it's a terrible song
It wouldn't have been terrible if Alice Ripley performed it.
I agree.
She;s better than Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp.
Idina Menzel + Anthony Rapp= Alice Ripley
You're right..."It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" was from the movie Husle and Flow, and it was a horrible song AND movie.
