His work for Slumdog Millionaire earned him worldwide fame, and Oscars for the categories 'Best Song' and 'Best Original Score'.
I sure do wish the days when ACTUAL good songs were nominated. How did this song win?! It was horrible, and belonged in BOMBAY DREAMS on stage, not winning for best song of the year at the Oscars. The song was a mess, and Slumdog Millionaire is highly overrated and was not better then Benjamin Buttons by far. The only reason it won was because the Academy likes to think of themselves as "ethnicnally diverse".

Slumdog Millionaire was a fantastic movie and deserved the win. And a LOT of people were rooting for "Jai Ho" to win Best Song, myself included.
Rahman's extremely talented--I love his Bollywood scores and I don't understand why Bombay Dreams wasn't up to those standards.

Jai Ho was horrible.
And I liked Bombay Dreams. But really...Slumdog was trash. And so was that song. Almost as sad as when "it's hard out here for a pimp" won.
muscle23ftl: Next thing I know you'll be saying they should revive Bombay Dreams with Brooke Shields...
Brooke Shields, Jennifer Hope Wills, Judy Kuhn and Charlotte D'Amboise!

If you liked Bombay Dreams's score and disliked Slumdog's, I can't really say anything because we'll obviously never agree.
Oh, I would too. Because Brooke Shields is a Broadway Star. A legend. So much better than Donna Murphy!!
(i'm totally being sarcastic by the way)
Bombay Dreams starring Patti LuPone as "the water fountain".
the racism expressed by the mental pygmy in this thread is ASTOUNDING.
'Jai Ho' is a rousing anthem and the best performance all night-too bad it was truncated. Seriously, just because you don't understand a culture or its music does not make it less deserving. It's a triumphant piece of music.
I second that Benjamin Button was dreck. A Lifetime movie with a budget.
Yes, I'm racist and stupid because I disliked Slumdog and didn't think that the songs from it were very good. Definately interesting reasoning. I guess I'm racist and don't understand urban black culture too because I thought the song "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp!" was trash?

No kidding, Bombay Dreams was awful.
No you're racists because you said they only won because they're indian. And you basically disparaged the WHOLE of indian music.
I said the academy voted for it because they want to appear to be ethnically diverse...and that is the truth. It's the same reason that song from CRASH won as well, not because it was a good song, but because the Academy was playing themselves as being "understanding" of different ethnic populations. And how did I disparge the whole of Indian music by saying I disliked the A.R. Rahman Slumdog songs? Especially when I said I like Bombay Dreams? And even if I didn't like Indian music, that makes me a racist pygmy?

Pretty much every BP nomination had some minority in it so you could make that claim for every movie that won.
And no Indian movie has won prior to this; only Lagaan won Best Foreign Picture. If you want to view Slumdog as an Indian movie, that is (which it really isn't).
Obviously those who didn't like Bombay Dreams are not only racist, but transgenderphobic and do not understand the culture.
See how easy it is to point fingers? Sorry, but Slumdog Millionare seems to have won not because it was the best picture of the year, but because the Academy was riding the popularity bandwagon and trying to prove something.
Please, anyone with a decent ear can listen to Jai Ho and hear how dreadful it is. I'd rather listen to Shakka Lakka Baby a million times then have to hear that horrid song again.

If the Academy was trying to ride popularity, then they would have nominated TDK and it would have won.
"Shakka Laka Baby" is a fun song but incredibly shallow. It doesn't fill me with the emotions that "Jai Ho" does.
Seriously? Wow. Guess you really like the song. I think it's horrible. It makes me feel like I need to poop!

It's okay, most of Bombay Dreams's score makes me want to pierce my eardrums so I guess we're even.
So any movie without white people that wins an award does so because the academy wants to appear to be ethnically diverse?
Did penelope Cruz win to show ethnic Diversity?
Did Javier Bardem win to show ethic diversity?
Did Jennifer Hudson?
Jamie Foxx?
Morgan Freeman?
Denzel?
Halle?
Benicio?
Cuba?
Sidney?
Hattie?
