When I first interviewed Boyd during rehearsals for GYPSY at City Center, he was polite but gave brief responses to my questions. Since then, a certain kind of friendship has developed between us and he really opened up to me when I did another chat with him a few weeks ago.
Enjoy it! Yes, there are a few Patti comments!

Posted: 7/16/10 at 4:27pmHe really is a nice man. I had a meeting backstage at the St. James while Gypsy was there and I was carrying a bunch of bags. Mr. Gaines opened 2 different doors for me, once as I was going in and once as I was leaving, while asking if I could manage everything.

Posted: 7/16/10 at 10:37pmThe article (and the subject of the article) are wonderful! Boyd Gaines' portrayal in JOURNEY'S END was one of the most heart touching moments I have ever had in the theater (and I loved his Herbie, too).

Posted: 7/17/10 at 12:14amI still think one of the most beautiful moments on stage that I've ever seen was when he kissed his wedding ring near the end of Journey's End. What a brilliant performance he gave. I still get chills thinking about that show.

His final scene as Herbie always broke my heart. I knew it was coming and it still got me every time.

As a vet, I have real issues with presentations having to do with war - just not my comfort zone at all. Some schmuck told me that JOURNEY'S END was "removed from the action of the war itself", so I should be fine. Needless-to-say, I really wasn't breathing by the time the houselights came up - and sat for a good half-hour on the curb outside the theater regaining some semblence of reality.
Mr. Gaines saw me as he left the theater, and stopped to chat for a bit - and it was a wonderful connection.

I keep hoping that Boyd and Patti will do a production of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? That would certainly get Boyd nominated for "Best Actor in a Play".
(For the record, I'd like to see Kristin Chenoweth play Honey and Reichen Lehmkuhl play Nick.
