"Every single one of you except for that person has respect, and I and the rest of the company oppreciate it."
I find it hilariously ironic that the only reason we know every word of her outburst is because it was bootlegged.

I was there.
She was giving an amazing performance but then came "the rant" right in the middle of "Rose's Turn" and the spell was broken.

It was a segment on mobile phones ringing in theaters, though they noted Patti's rant was directed at a photo-taker. Stacey Keach, Alan Gilbert and Ken Davenport were among those interviewed.
Surprisingly, they concluded it's mostly a problem with older patrons who don't know how to or don't bother to shut off their ringers. So they said the problem will solve itself in a few decades. But they said nothing about the light from the screens of teens reading their text messages.

"the problem will solve itself in a few decades."
Yeah when they all die. Then we will have the vibrating tatoos to worry about.
Can think of an iteresting possibility

Posted: 3/22/12 at 12:40pmThanks for the info Broadway Local. I thought there is a way for a theatre or any other place to sort of block the signal to begin with? Or am I showing my age as one that won't be here in a few more decades to even worry about it?:)

Relax, dolls. There is no footage of that now legendary outburst.
That particluar section starts off with a flash of a bootleg video of LuPone performing "Rose's Turn" but when the actual clip of the famous audio actually plays, they just show a slideshow of press photos of LuPone in the "Rose's Turn" number.
Again... there is NO actual bootleg video of LuPone's rant at that particular performance. Its still just audio-only.

Posted: 3/22/12 at 4:26pmNot long ago, I saw a musical that had a short run. In the second act, the 20 something next to me started texting wildly. I whispered, "Put that away!" She said, "Why? Nothing's happening in this stupid show!" I was about to pull a LuPone when I realized... "she's right."

it's hardly only teens who are texting. When I saw A Little Night Music the woman two seats down from me, probably in her early 40s, would not stop texting the entire show. It was extremely distracting.
What I also don't understand is why you would pay for an extremely pricey orchestra seat and then sit there and text for 2 and a half hours?

"I text, therefore I am"....some peeps need validation from others constantly that their choices and emotions are valid.

Posted: 3/22/12 at 7:11pmAt the risk of showing my age, I once saw a very pissed off Katharine Hepburn stop a matinee of The West Side Waltz because a flash pic was taken of her. She demanded that the guy be escorted out of the theater and said that she would gladly pay for his ticket. Hepburn was more relaxed in demeanor than Lupone but then again when she broke character she was playing a woman much more laid back than Mama Rose; and she certainly didn't interrupt herself in the middle of Rose's Turn. The audience was completely supportive of Hepburn.
