This reminds me of every Sondheim show.One should see it once before listening to the song. Just to let it wash over you.Then study the score and go see it again. It's a whole different, new show.Especially this show - I missed 3/4 of the lyrics the first time. Had a really hard time liking it.Second viewing: liked better - just because I knew what the hell was going on.Third viewing: Started developing my obsessions about the show.Fourth viewing: Full blown obsession.

Felt so sorry for Brian D'Arcy James. He can't seem to cut a break. SO much heavy lifting for a show that only repays the favor about 50% of the time. First act doesn't click in until the show stopping "A Musical" number. And then it retreats again. Some music is catchy and some songs just lie there. And some songs are so word heavy that you miss some [probably] mega-clever lyrics. Major prob is the plot. Again...plodding. The numbers liven things up (duh), but the story is stock and, in the ...

I was at the penultimate LuPone GYPSY performance. The one where she stopped "Rose's Turn" and yelled at the photographer. I saw DREAMGIRLS in previews. "And I'm Telling You..." Where audience members stood on their seats screaming. Saw Lauren Kennedy in penultimate SIDE SHOW.1 show. Saw Merman in DOLLY...and Miller in MAME. Saw original FOLLIES in Boston. "Foxtrot" and "Uptown/Downtown".

Damn. I was hoping this would be the production to put PERSEPHONE over the top but I guess it isn't. That was the problem with TPOP - the actors weren't good enough. Except for Grove - who was perfection. Someday...

Harvey would have said: "Huh? That's it?" Not a lot about Harvey. In fact not a lot period. 1 hr running time with a lot of exercises in theme and variation.
