I've only been able to listen to a few if the tracks--but so far and it is AWESOME. There is a booklet with lyrics so you can follow the story--and it has gorgeous pictures.
Jamie is very caught up in the party/promiscuity/drug culture of the 80s. The story is a week in his life. His wife has left him, his mother has died and he's trying to reconnect with his brother. He dreamed of being a novelist and has to work as a fact checker for a magazine. He parties to forget...uses drugs to "feel". Some of lyrics are harsh and very common to that kind of subculture.
Yet, Patrick's tenor is so wonderful. He can rock...he can be wistful. He really sounds grand. The music is 80s rock style. So...it is different from Raoul/and ALW's music but that voice--it is definitely our Patrick.
The other cast members are incredibly fabulous, too--including Christine Ebersole, Eden Espinosa, Sherri Rene Scott, Gavin Creel and Jesse L. Martin (currently of "Law & Order)
JUST FYI: If you want to get an idea of the story, rent the movie that starred Michael J. Fox. The movie and this musical are based on the book.
Makes you wonder how some folks survived that kind of lifestyle--and helps you see why many didn't.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
