R.C., Jury duty is a must in the United States, too. I served in November, 2010 and got yet another summons earlier this year. You're not required to serve for at least another 12 months after serving, so I followed the telephone registration process and got a automated message saying I was good to go.
I was sent a very threatening letter by the court saying if I did not respond within a couple of days, my azz would be in jail. I received a questionnaire the following day that ststaed I needed to fill it out and send in right away. All that for a stupid questionnaire? I thought there was a warrant out for my arrest or something by how serious the whole thing sounded. Needless to say, I never did get locked in the pokey with Bubba, so all's fine.
This kid must've known the seriousness involved. They beat you over the head with details and what will happen to you should u attempt to pull a fast one and it's never pretty. Hard to believe anyone would think "calling-in sick" then going to a show would result in a happy ending. I sort of feel bad for the mom, even if she played a big role in it and should've known better. Hope they put him in a more secure part of the jail and not with some hardened criminal. Scary!
