A lot of backstage crew play on the teams. So any show that requires a lot of big strong crew members is going to have a great team.

Whoever has anything to do with the show can play. They don't have to star in it. Didn't anyone ever see A Baby Story on TLC where they followed the couple from Les Mis and they were at a Broadway Show Leauge game? Also, they have an archived video of the opening from last year on broadway.com

The fact that it's softball has nothing to do with it being theater. Other companies have softball teams, too. But yes, baseball is much cooler than softball. :)
