Ouch...it wasn't a good week for some shows.

Aargh poor Mel Brooks!
Oh, you said it. "Wonderful Town" dropped below 50%. I'm glad to see that "Brooklyn Boy" is posting a respectable gross.
Even Beauty and the Beast, which has been doing fairly well for awhile, is just under 60%. And the Lion King in the 80s? Not bad, but they could do better.
Stupid snow.

Pretty awful all around. Billy Crystal and Wicked were the only sellouts. Seven shows had attendance figures in the 50s and one (Wonderful Town) was at 49.9. While these numbers are typical for January and February, it's still too bad. I hope some of these shows can hold on until Spring.
That's because Brantleys head blocked the entrance to the theatre.

and that was BEFORE the reviews came out.

The audience for straight plays on Broadway has been shrinking for years, to the point that it's become rare for a non-musical to run longer than four or five months anymore, no matter how many rave reviews it receives. The only plays to turn a profit in the last couple of seasons have been all-star revivals of clasic plays: A Raisin in the Sun with Combs, Rashad and MacDonald; Long Day's Journey with Redgrave and Denehey; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Ashley Judd. Billy Crystal's show will be the first new nonmusical since LifeX3 two seasons ago to turn a profit.
Little Women had a heavily comped week with press previews and plenty of opening night tix for investors and such, so their gross in not awful
A lot of other shows took a bigger hit than Democracy.
Anyway, this is not totally representative of what a lot of shows are doing this month. The snow cut in to the three to four biggest shows of the week. Saturday matinee and evening, and Sunday matinee (and evening, for some shows).
Don't forget "Proof", the best and most successful play in years.

I remembered Proof but it closed two years ago (and opened back in 2000). I wasn't trying to make a list of EVERY play of the last few years to turn a profit -- it I were to name every succesful play since 2000, I'd have mentioned Proof and a half dozen others.
how about twelve angry men? I hate it do so well. Even this week, almost 90%

I cant believe shows like brooklyn are only in the 50's. i thought tons of people wanted to see that show.
I was reight. The grosses were brutal
"Brooklyn" is barely staying alive. I doubt it will make it to March.
Margo-Valid point. Sometimes I get defensive b/c I love "Proof" so much.
Sad week ..
Big drops were
RENT was down -28.4
and LITTLE WOMEN -22.6%..
""Brooklyn" is barely staying alive. I doubt it will make it to March."
Oh.. it will, it will.
Poor Brooklyn.. it won't last with these numbers
No one can tell me break even is below 250,00 for Brooklyn.. my guess is that it would be around that and its not doing that
Sorry EricoFan.. but, bklyn's running costs are super low. Updated On: 1/24/05 at 07:39 PM
