Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:32pmThis is not a good time period for Broadway. Wait until the Holidays are over...

Looks like "Brooklyn" & "Gem Of The Ocean" are headed for the scrap heap. It appears Whoopi has worn out her welcome. Good thing Dracula & Bombay are closing.
There will be a ton of cut rate offerings for shows in the next 3 months & we intend to take full advantage of them
I want to see , in no particular order
1. Spamalot
2. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
3. Little Women ( for my wife)

Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:34pmIt is sad, because Gem of the Ocean seems to be really great.

Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:49pmI think Spamalot will be the next $1,000,000, 100% show, probably the only one this season. I've been holding out for discounts, come on give us a break! We're big fans. How about a one day sale? Anything?
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#5
Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:54pmThere are MILLIONS of Monty Python fans that are going to eat this up. And I say, bring it on! Well, since I can't see it, what can I really say? **cries**

Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:57pmActually, the holidays are far and away the BEST time for Broadway, with all the tourists in town. January and February are the hardest times for all the shows in town when even certified hits are known to struggle (and struggling shows shut down altogether).
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#7
Posted: 12/20/04 at 7:58pmYeah really, Margo. The Holidays are generally a strong time for ticket sales. Tourists are everywhere. I don't think Bwaytheatre11 knows what he's talking about.

This is the first week Brooklyn is below its weekly nut of 300,000..
It is getting lower and lower each week. Let's hope it does well over the holidays. I really want this show to succeed.

Brooklyn's weekly cost is not high at all like other musicals... But look at other shows - (almost) everything is down.. (-31%,-19%,-17%) including Little Women that just started at the..
Virgina! *getting a little shop flashback*
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#11
Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:22pmIt doesn't seem that bad. The ones with really low percentages are the ones that have been doing horribly anyway: Dracula, Bombay Dreams, and Brooklyn, for example.
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#12
Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:23pmWell, Little Women is just getting started. Once word of mouth begins, I bet it will go up.
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#13
Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:24pmWhen it officially opens it'll (Little Women) do a lot better.
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#14
Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:30pmLittle Women is performing pretty respectably in previews. It did $505,007 last week, with a decent capacity figure of 77.4% (in a 1,200 seat house), and a healthy average ticket price of $66.73, sorta in the neighborhood of Chicago, La Cage and Fiddler. For a yet unknown show, it's actually exceeding what I thought it would do in previews.

Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:32pmMy understanding has been that December is one of the best months for Broadway and Sept. and Feb. are the worst.
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#16
Posted: 12/20/04 at 9:34pmYeah, September a lot of people are going back to school, and February is just a blah winter month. Everyone wants to go to Hawaii.
re: Broadway Grosses: Ouch#17

But think of all the people that are watching the Rockettes becuase of the Christmas season.
And I speak for myself in saying that I don't have money right now to be able to afford to buy myself a Broadway ticket. (Xmas presents...)

Posted: 12/20/04 at 11:12pmI'm coming to NYC in February -- I'll be devestated if I can't catch some great shows. I was hoping to see "Gem of the Ocean" -- what do you think will survive until mid-Feb?

In general Margo is right in that the holidays are usually good for Broadway, especially the musicals. However, this doesn't mean that every week during the holidays is consistently good. The week after Thanksgiving tends to be a bit slow, and the last full week before Christmas can be a very poor week for box office due to Christmas shopping.
Frankly, I don't think last week was as bad as previous years, but this might be because Christmas is on a Saturday, so there are still a number of shopping days between the end of the week (Sunday) and the holiday.
The period between Christmas and New Years is usually the busiest of the year for Broadway musicals. Plays (like Night Mother) won't be helped as much but should pick up.

Whoopi is down so much, because last weeks 83% was based on only three performances. She is doing just fine.
Let's focus on Brooklyn. Everyone say a prayer to keep it open.
