Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

Whether you like it or not, shows need to be produced to bring a new generation to the generation. If Spider-man (and lots of the other commercial stuff that's coming) is what it takes, then so be-in. I'd rather there be people coming to the theatre, and a bit of crap on Broadway, then Broadway ceasing to exist.

"shows need to be produced to bring a new generation to the generation."

I'm not sure what that means, but I think it's the same fallacious thinking that brought Glory Days, [title of show], High Fidelity, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and many other flops to Broadway - this idea that:

a) "Young" people want to sit in a Broadway theatre on a regular basis, and

b) They will only come to see a certain kind of show (which, from the formula, seems to be loud, sentimental, and intellectually unchallenging).

And don't make the assumption that I wish for anything to close; I merely understand that wish to be more than just ill-will (as opposed to others who seem to prefer every statement be reduced to a simple black & white assumption so they can easily approve or condemn).

"2) Anyone who hopes for Spiderman to fail is probably doing so out of a love for theatre that appeals to be something more than just a mindless tourist diversion. We already have a glut of that (Phantom, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Million Dollar Quartet, etc.) as opposed to Broadway fare that aims to be something more (Scottsboro Boys, Catered Affair, Light In The Piazza, etc.)"

Thank you, newintown. That was my intention in saying that. I love adequate theatre that is not some giant spectacle, but enough for me to enjoy and also to make me think.
Seeing SPIDER-MAN on the marquee pains me because it shows to me that, in place of a nice original show, producers put on a $65 million myriad of technical trickery that is solely eye candy.

@newintown: Apologies, that was a typo! I meant 'bring in generations to the theatre.'

I think these spectacle shows are also being produced because people love seeing their money onstage. I'm a little frustrated nowadays seeing a stripped-down two man show and having to still pay $100+ for it. At least tourists and others who pay top tickets price feel like their money was put to good use if they go with a spectacle show - this is a big reason why I think Wicked is so popular.
