Those are looking to be some great numbers for Spider-Man. They are almost at a million in only a 5 show week. They could have a long run if it continues like this.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

Wow. Lion King almost overtook Wicked. And Spider-Man would be making SO much money if they were playing 8 shows a week (well not counting the money they would lose from creating more technical kinks I suppose).

I'm hoping Spider Man falls flat on its ass one day...but it probably won't happen.

For the most part, consistency all around.

What a malicious thing to say, why would you even post that?

Spider-Man is selling well.. i think people are more curious about Spiderman than anything else. Once the reviews come out and word of mouth starts to get around, I'd expect it's numbers to fall. The show also doesn't start a regular 8 show a week schedule until January, which is suprising considering the Christmas holiday coming up where most shows make a ton of money.

It's performance schedule is:
Dec. 6-12: 5 shows
Dec. 13-19: 5 shows
Dec. 20-26: 6 shows
Dec. 27 - Jan. 2: 8 shows
Jan. 3-9: 8 shows
Jan. 10-16: 7 shows(Jan. 11 opening night)
Starting Jan. 17: 8 shows each week.

I don't understand the need for Rain to continue past the holidays. Will it really make money in the dead of winter?? And why is Colin Quinn extending?? He'll be performing to 50 people a night in the winter. Everyone's numbers should continue to get better as Christmas/New Year's gets closer.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

^ sure people are curious about SPIDERMAN but because of what it is I honestly dont think reviews will effect it too much.. there are plenty of shows that got by becuase of what it was and did not get the best reviews out there

Spiderman would extrapolate to $1.47mm with 8 shows. If they are running a standard theater and royalty agreement, that would mean about 1.29mm after gross expenses and theater cut. Sub out the $1mm operating expenses. Then pay out ~40% of the profit to the royalty pool, and you've got about $175K for investors. At that rate, they'd recoup in about 7 years.

Of course, since they are licensing the character from Marvel/Disney, and have U2 writing the music, and Taymor doing the book/directing, I'd imagine the royalties are more expensive than usual.

Hopefully the money that came in late was smart enough to make sure Bono & friends don't get paid until they do.

That is an awful thing to say about the show! Have you even seen it yet? Is your statement based on some crazy moral or ethical grounds? Whatever.

Tickets are indeed selling exceedingly well and my hunch is that it may sustain momentum despite lackluster reviews. It appeals to tourists who are LOVING it and telling me so after they see it. I haven't heard a single negative thing about the show except for on these boards. It might not be entirely critic-proof, but it has a nice pedigree and the theater is in a prime location to appeal to those who will buy the tickets. I won't be seeing the show until the 22nd...and it was tough finding a date with a decent single seat to see the show when I went to the box office last week.

I'm sorry but the statement that only the people on these boards are negative about the show is a bit much. I have a lot of close friends/family in NYC and the ones who have seen it hated it, and that diagnosis of the show has been repeated on many sites, and even on TV/radio. So to say that the majority of people seeing it love it is kinda out there considering that at every performance alot of people are walking out saying how incoherent the 2nd act is and how lackluster the score is.
I hope the show picks up the pace in terms of fixing the book and score...right now that's where the problems are. IT seems like for the most part they have worked out the big kinks in the technical aspect...now to move onto the REAL heart of the show.

I'm surprised people are shocked about how well SPIDERMAN is selling. It's one of the most anticipated shows (by people who want to love it and people who want to hate it) in years so the fact it's selling out right now should come as no surprise to anyone.

I can't wait to see this show.. or any show for that matter.. FINALLY dethrone the 'almighty' WICKED for top gross.
#16

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

Why is "WICKED" being the top grosser a bad thing? I would rather that then spiderman be the topper

Really bummed that La Bete isnt doing that well...and that the numbers for BBAJ weren't higher - here's to hoping that folks mobilize to see this show before it closes

well thankfully the holidays are coming...we are going to see a spike in most (if not all) shows numbers...the ones struggling will get some life back in them

Here's an interesting way to look at the grosses:

http://andrewasnes.typepad.com/theater_advisor/2010/12/broadway-grosses-nov-29-dec-5-2010-and-why-revenue-per-seat-matters.html

A different way of looking at things.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

fingerlakessinger, while I hate overgeneralizations on this board as much as the next person, I am only stating the mere fact of the matter, from MY observations, in my post. I work at large luxury hotel in Midtown and have no heard one negative thing about the show from a guest. Now, mind you, I feel like all I do is work, so I may live in a bubble. I was merely stating that between this board and my interaction with tourists, these were the only negative comments that I had heard. Sheesh.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

I'm hoping Spider Man falls flat on its ass one day...but it probably won't happen.

You sound like a complete moron. Why, as a theatre person, would you wish for ANY show to fail? That means fewer jobs on (and off-)Broadway. Sorry, I just hate when people, especially young people, make such asinine comments. That's similar to the Republicans hoping that Obama fails. No one wins in that situation.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

Sundaymorning, it's never as simple as that.

1) Any "jobs lost" in the theatre are jobs expected to be lost eventually. Nothing runs forever, particularly any theatre job. To hope for such a thing is antithetical to the ephemeral nature of art. You want job security? Go into a more stable discipline (although, in this economy, who knows what that is?). Out-of-work artists always move on to the next job (if they can get one - if not, they transition).

2) Anyone who hopes for Spiderman to fail is probably doing so out of a love for theatre that appeals to be something more than just a mindless tourist diversion. We already have a glut of that (Phantom, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Million Dollar Quartet, etc.) as opposed to Broadway fare that aims to be something more (Scottsboro Boys, Catered Affair, Light In The Piazza, etc.).

You may find the sentiment repellent, but make an effort to explore what may be behind it before jerking the knee.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/5

If tourists want to spend their money on 'diversions,' why not? It's their money. Broadway is commercial theater. Always has been. The audience determines what runs. It's democracy at work. Besides what's 'mindless' to you, might be deeply meaningful and joyful to others. There are various shows on Broadway that don't appeal to me, but I would never root any one of them to fail. No matter what I think, I don't doubt for a second that they provide work for theater professionals who take great pride in their craft, no matter how long the show runs. I don't know which profession you work in, but I can't imagine anyone would be pleased to have others rooting for them to be out of work and blithely think, 'They can always get another job.' Well, in this economy, that seems especially insensitive.
