HogansHero said: re Carousel, it is certainly in the black for the week, but the demand metrics are weak. Right now it could go either way. It is pretty clear it is not going to be a blockbuster but it could be sustainable for a while. This is one that depends on reviews. The property is no Hello Dolly, and there is no Bette. The question is whether there is a Bernadette. It'll never recoup, and maybe we will look back on it and say it was the revival that taught us that almost all revivals belong at non-profits. Don't hold your breath."
Isn't that the problem for Carousel, though? My guess is that the reviews are tepid to weak, based on early reports. The contrast with My Fair Lady may be rather stark. But there is a built-in audience for Carousel, at least for a while, and I think Joshua Henry is a fantastic talent. But I imagined a hypothetical weekend NYC trip with my wife this fall, and my quick list for shows to see included The Band's Visit and My Fair Lady, just based on my own interests and the comments on this board.

Great list. Assuming you two haven’t seen this revival and it remains in tip-top shape, I’d highly recommend adding Hello, Dolly! to your list.

Wow, over $1 million for HELLO, DOLLY! That's incredible. I love that Peters and Garber have proven to be such a winning combination. I really hope Rudin is able to keep the show open past July with yet another stellar pairing.
These numbers are great. How great that MEAN GIRLS broke the million-dollar mark on its first week of previews. And look at MY FAIR LADY playing to 100% capacity--I didn't realize the show was selling as well as it is until I tried getting a pair of tickets for a specific weekend in late April and couldn't find one. I can't wait for Lauren Ambrose's love letters come opening night.

Sigh.....remember when it was a big deal for shows to occasionally break into the million dollar club? Now, it's what, 60% of shows are there often - or more? It's not even an achievement, just more proof of the expense.
I'm not begrudging them of success...just bemoaning the cost of everything.

I agree. Everyone here loves the high grosses but in the long run we are the ones paying for it to be so.
