Ouch for my favorite show "Chicago." But fear not, Spring is almost here...and better box office receipts for Broadway all around. from Roman in Austin, Texas... five days and counting until my arrival in NYC. : )

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Priscilla and Sister Act can't last much longer...

Apparently (according to an insider) it was a bizarrely slow week all around. However, sales for this week have been in good shape.

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

"That's a great first week for ONCE"

What's great about a 55% potential gross?

A lot of shows dropped off as last week was boosted by President's Day Monday, H2S is looking iffy but it's still doing better than Prisicilla and Sister Act.

Given the amount of comping that happens during a first week of previews the act that ONCE still out grossed Priscilla, Sister Act and Memphis is pretty good in my book. A lot were worried The show might suffer the same fate as Lysistrata Jones (Off broadway hit with no stars or advance) but Once looks like it has some real potential- gross percentage will hopefully rise with word of mouth.

After Eight - 55% gross potential is a very solid week for a first preview. Many long running shows (Phantom, Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, Chicago, etc.) frequently have weeks below 55% gross potential. Even so, previews are heavily comped and 55% is actually quite high. If you'll remember a few months back, Lysistrata Jones was performing in the teens and Bonnie and Clyde was hovering around 30%.

Also, I think it's ridiculous to make any judgments on grosses for only 8 performances when there has been no chance for word of mouth to spread and there are no reviews out. You can take your pessimism and unjustified hatred for new musicals back to the Once preview thread. It's really missing your commentary.

bd,

I have no hatred of new musicals. Just bad ones.

No one wants any more of my commentary on the Once preview thread, and indeed, I said all I needed to say. And what I wrote there sent people into such a frenzy that I was, quite frankly, astonished. Can't believe how some people go ballistic when someone dares veer from the party line. You, evidently, are one such.

As to waiting for the word of mouth to spread, what if that word is.........

bad?

I'm sorry you feel that way but you're certainly entitled to your opinions. I was commenting on how you seemed to reject anyone who said they liked something including other musicals.

To make this post relevant, I completely agree word of mouth could be bad. However, I've heard mostly good things. Still, I said "it's ridiculous to make any judgments on grosses for only 8 performances" which goes both ways. The show could certainly be a huge success, a colossal failure, or somewhere in between but one week of performances in a preview period isn't going to give you much insight either way.

Why is it when shows have a mediocre week there's always an excuse for it? But when shows have great weeks, that means that all is well and it's GREAT. Sometimes shows have bad weeks. Some shows have bad weeks every week and no amount of excuse is going to change that.

When you take into account the amount of comps Once had for that week, 55% & $525K is pretty damn good. for a small set & cast, it's weekly nut must be pretty low.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

hmm JCS might have an issue, but the gross is super low because of the special there running during previews....

^ They were at 92.3% capacity and only had 4 performances......

...For their first 4 previews, I don't see how they might "have an issue" with those numbers... Updated On: 3/6/12 at 02:44 AM

And also keep in mind godspell was in the 80%-90% their first few weeks and we see how thats playing out.... papering is a magical thing..... Updated On: 3/6/12 at 04:34 AM

Yes, it's too early to tell for Superstar, what with only four performances, but even when Godspell was papering like crazy to get up to 80-90% capacity their gross potential percentage never reached up in the 70s like Superstar did for this weekend.

I could see Superstar papering like crazy. I was there last night and the entire casts of Spider-Man and Godspell were there, and I'm pretty sure they got comped, so it's hard to say who else did too.
