An important distinction: Nathan'slast 3 Broadway shows all had famous costars(Andrew Garfield inAngels, and incredibly starry ensembles in TheFront Page andIt's Only A Play). He's the only name selling tickets inGary.
And, when NY theatregoers are choosing between plays, there are a LOT of other stars on Broadway this season. In the past 6 years, Lane has done 4 Broadway shows +Iceman Cometh at BAM.TheTitus Andronicussubtitlecould also be scaring people off."
If memory serves correct, Angels in America (which is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen) didn’t have great box office initially although it perked up part way into its run. It also never announced recoupment. Of course, the long running time and two parts probably kept some people away.
