If memory serves correct, Angels in America (which is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen) didn’t have great box office initially although it perked up part way into its run. It also never announced recoupment. Of course, the long running time and two parts probably kept some people away.

Correct –– its numbers weren't great for the majority of the run. It averaged 68% gross potential, average ticket $102, and reportedly cost $7.5 million to mount.

Shows do this all the time, for no logical reason. Once On This Island did something similar last year. But you're right that the Shuberts may not have a big (BIG) musical tenant waiting in the wings.

The cast at Be More Chill is too loved by the fans and it would be chaos if any of them were replaced. Plus loyalty is a big thing for the producers and they wouldn't do it. Once they need a new cast I could see big names coming on board but I don't think the show will last that long.
