I immediately thought of the wigs used in hairspray, but unless you are SERIOUSLY wanting to go over the top, that might not work...

I created a formal hairstyle off of an X-files episode once, it was like a modern/WWII mix, I loved it. I think it would rock to use a broadway hair style for Prom and yes the oscars are WAY over done.
