Does your family or friends give you Broadway themed gifts? Do you wish they would? What about Broadway ticket gift certificates?
I wish my mother would actually ask me what I wanted for Christmas and dispense with buying me clothes I don't want and just give me money for tickets to Broadway shows. But actually as a 45 year old male, I think it's time to stop exchanging gifts with my parents and just get gifts for my 12 year old son. Does your family "get" your love of Broadway? Or do they just look at you, shake their head, and wonder?

I've actually though about this recently. I've never been very materialistic and so I don't really get into gift exchanging. I'm of the opinion that the nicest gift you can get someone is a nice card and maybe a gift card, because no matter how well you think you know someone, I think the thing that they'd like most is just some cash to buy themselves something they want (and I don't think that's bad of them). I can't delve into someone's mind to see what they'd like at that moment in time (unless they collect something like snow globes) and I think asking someone what they'd like for a gift is disrespectful to your relationship with them (be it as family, friends or significant others).
That said, my friends get my love for Broadway much more than my family does. But boy would I love it if they all just gave me cash to buy tickets to see shows (and for airfare / hotel prices).

I know, right? I think that's what sort of depresses me is that my mom operates on the old tapes of maybe when I was growing up...it's like hey, woman, who gave birth to me...get with reality! Lol! I don't want clothes from Jos A Bank! Give me a Today Tix gift card!
One way I've gotten around paying for hotel and airfare in NYC to see shows is, I'm a flight attendant...so I let the airline take me there for free and pay for my room and I get to see a show (of course I pay for that, lol)....but I've seen 19 shows this year. I am very grateful and thankful for that opportunity. So a career in the airlines might be a good one for other theater lovers to pursue. Just saying.

My mom and I both love theatre, so she usually gets me cast recordings, shirts, and other merchandise from shows I like. She also has a friend who knows we both love theatre but can't always afford tickets, so every holiday season he'll get us tickets to one or two shows. Last year I got my first job and actually started making my own money, so I got to take my mom to Side Show right before it closed.

No, my family knows how much theater means to me. Has nothing to do with gift giving.
I'm a grown up and take care of myself and my passions. I don't expect others to do that for me. Nor would I want them too.
I do not understand expensive gift giving between adults, anyway. My family members kind of stop with gifts when we all sarted having kids. The gift giving goes to the kids.

Is this thread about holiday gift ideas or about parents not buying their kids broadway stuff when they know they are obsessed with it?
