Broadway Night on American Idol

People on here Piddle about songs from 1948? I must have missed that. It must have been buried under 1,948 Wicked & Avenue Q threads.

Personally, I'd love to see a Broadway night, but you're right, "Broadway" is the worst insult Simon can throw. Despite portraying the ex-Rent cast member as one of the ROCKERS, a lot of these kids have nice Broadway voices this year.

Seriously though, was anyone on here ALIVE in 1948?

They're looking for pop singers, and they turn away people for being "too musical theatre." Why would they have a Broadway themed show if that's clearly not what they're looking for. It wouldnt' be any good for the judging process.

And I second what Priest says. They'd butcher them.

Personally I would like to see/hear it because Broadway songs are often very difficult to sing, and I would like to hear how diverse these contestants really are. However, I don't think Randy, Paula, or Simon have any right to judge and give critique when they most likely know NOTHING about musical theatre.

I don't think they'd butcher the songs if they chose the right ones. Wicked, Brooklyn, RENT, tick, tick... BOOM!, Ain't Misbehavin', The Wiz, Godspell, Hairspray, Dreamgirls, Songs for a New World, those are all shows that lend themselves great to pop-influenced singers. Of course I wouldn't want to hear anyone sing "Johanna" or "Being Alive," but pop-influenced songs would be fine.

It would be cool to hear people singing broadway songs but I dont think it's for American Idol. They do look for people who lean more towards being the next pop/hip hop sensation and they do turn down those who sound to "Broadway" so having a B-way night would make no sense. If they ever made a show looking for a new broadway singer then, hey I'd say full steam ahead but for American Idol..no.

If I remember correctly weren't some Broadway songs sung last year?

Jen Hudson sang Circle of Life. Although she wasn't my favorite performer that was really stand out performance.

Infact the most memorable performances last year were from musicals. LaToya sang "Don't Rain on my Parade" which was phenominal, and the song that made Diana memorbale was "Don't Cry Out Loud" which I believe is was sung in "Boy From Oz" (don't shoot me, I never saw it/don't have the CD).

All I am saying is that I think choosing the right songs could make for a great show, and who knows with such a wide audience it could open up Broadway to a whole new audience. Not such a bad idea - that is if the contenstants don't spend the entire song doing riffs.
