Has anyone predicting the flop familiar with the show? It is a moving evening of theatre, especially one pretty disturbing scene that I assume they're keeping, that is sure to garner attention for its bold themes. Also, though its a play, as it was submitted during its original Broadway run, it is quite musical (there's even a fab cast recording that I treasure that's never been on CD). Plus, if you've ever seen Arie perform, her stype fits Shange's style perfectly. Also, they can lift many sections for TV appearances. I can't imagine that Goldberg isn't going to mention the show once or twice on The View. I'm pulling for this one.

"Why does everything have to be geared for the tourist?"
Because Broadway has gotten so expensive that only groups can afford to go.
"People keep comparing this to these huge musicals...it has like five actors and a bare stage, fer Chrissakes...lighten up!"
So why is Whoopi charging $100 for this show? People are comparing it to huge musicals because they are charging a huge musical price.

Lachanze?
And on a similar note, I would love to see any of the most excellent Passing Strange females in this show. They would be wonderful.

Posted: 6/24/08 at 6:03pmI think it will do well and attract a large black female audience. I saw the original cast and it is a wonderful show. It has been so long since I saw it and read it that I can't wait to see it again to refresh my memory. I would suspect that this will appeal to church groups (My church went to see the original run) and It will most likely attract the same people who ran to see "A Raisin in the Sun", "Cat.." and "Color Purple". My family, who does not do theatre went to NYC from philly to see "A Raisin in the Sun". And India.Arie has a nice sized fan base.

Posted: 6/24/08 at 6:06pmI don't think this will be a flop (at least not production wise, I don't know financially because I've never been good at predicting that). I love the casting so far and hope that the additional casting is just as inspired! I'm thrilled that Whoopi is taking another chance on Broadway theatrical piece and will use The View as a way of promoting the show in a way that is separate from Rosie's praising all things Broadway. With revisions, this production may be even more socially relevant than the last production!

Posted: 6/24/08 at 9:40pmWhen I pay top dollar for a Broadway show (which, admittedly, is rare) I don't pay it expecting huge, gaudy sets and extraneous ensemble members. In my opinion, a bare-bones show with performances as good (or better) than those in the huge musicals is worth just as much money. I don't see anyone complaining about the [title of show] ticket prices.

Oh my god, this show has everything! Half naked guys and girl on girl action! - [title of show]

You must have missed those threads. Do a search, they're there.

Oh, Brody, you know that my poor lame-ass Latino ass (does that sound redundant to anyone else? ) loves you just as much. Kisses, hun.
I think it's quite interesting that there are going to be revisions done to the play. What's great is that it probably means that Shange most be quite involved with the revival. Honestly, this is very exciting news.
Bobby, as usual, you are quite right, this show is simply lyrical. It's so musical without necessarily being a musical. You can just sit back, close your eyes, and listen to those words and be completely enthralled in the world of these women. It's also incredibly relevant and political. A wonderful text.

I'm really excited to see this. It's a piece that not many people would think of reviving as it was never deemed "a classic." Perhaps it will now, thanks to this revival. It's a beautiful piece. I've only seen a live production in St. Louis and that was very moving.
I agree that African American women will head to this in droves and that it could be very successful commercially. I love the poster!

I think people are quick to compare it to a big splashy musical because of the $100 ticket price.
For Colored Girls and Wicked don't cost the same amount to produce.
But if you're going to charge the same amount, people are going to expect to see something on the same scale, or they're going to feel cheated.
It's the American way! Buy your "art" by the yard, just like wallpaper or carpeting.
It just won't measure up.
