This'll have a shorter run than A CATERED AFFAIR and CRY-BABY!

A simple tax write-off for Ms. Goldberg, of course... so she has nothing to lose backing/producing/funding this.

THE VISIT never wanted CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE, it's too small for the star power of Rivera, Hearn and company.

COLORED GIRLS will be a good fit, I hope it's as exciting as the original was.

This is a beautiful show, and I'm actually very excited about the revival. A little nervous for this India Arie character--does anyone know, is she just a singer, or has she acted in the past? I hope they don't beef up her role, as For Colored Girls... is very much an ensemble show--there's no one "star".

I don't think is going to be the flop people are claiming. It is a wonderful show and, having seen India.Arie live, she's perfect.

And I don't think Whoopi would do anything for a tax write off. She has a great forum, re: The View, to promote the show. And Arie is sure to draw a large number of non-theatre goers.

At $100 per ticket, Whoopi better be discounting quick. She's doing an 8 show a week performance schedule and she won't be able to sustain the show. If I were her, I would have cut the Saturday matinee and tried a 7pm Saturday and a 10 pm Saturday.

I agree with BobbyBubby.
Whoppi seems very serious about theatre and this is an important piece on the history of black woman in this country and I doubt she is taking it lightly or as a tax write off.

And Gothampc, you know she isn't actually IN the show, right?

By now, we should all have learned to kindly disregard BrodyFosse's posts. I'm surprised he has yet to talk about his broadcast-quality DVD of the original run and posted pictures of Whoopi, Indie.Arie, or Shange.

Either way, I'm quite excited about this production. I saw a terrible production a community theatre did where I live at, and I would love to see a top-notch revival on Broadway. The language of the play is so breath-taking. Can't wait to hear about the rest of the cast.

jennyish, India.Arie <- (that's how her name appears everywhere. So along with learning to pronounce Ms Shange's name people will have to remember the period in India.Arie's name!) is a singer. Born in Denver and her father was an NBA player. I think this is her 1st time acting. I look forward to seeing her. She is a really down to earth person and I love her music. I think she will do a good job. With the type of music she writes, she seems a good fit for this.

I actually think this will do really well. You'd be surprised at the crowds that showed up for the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof revival. This could be a very prosperous time for African-American themed productions.

Broadway has a huge tourist following at the moment. How are theater parties going to sell a 1970s choreo-poem about black women with "suicide" in the title?

Why does everything have to be geared for the tourist? Or the stereotypical tourist, I should say.


Believe it or not, sometimes folks produce things--especially straight plays--on Broadway knowing they are not going to make a mint...or a dime, even. People keep comparing this to these huge musicals...it has like five actors and a bare stage, fer Chrissakes...lighten up!
