"Broadway Under the Stars, the free outdoor concert that shines the spotlight on the theater capital of the world and its brightest talent, for the first time ever, will take the stage at the Great Lawn in Central Park – on Monday, June 26, 2006 at 8:30pm. Known as the kick-off of the city’s outdoor concert season, Broadway Under the Stars will be presented by Target and produced by the NYC & Company Foundation and The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc.
“We are thrilled to bring the magic of Broadway Under the Stars to Central Park’s Great Lawn for the first time. I encourage all New Yorkers and our visitors from around the world to come to the lawn and enjoy this incredible night of classic song and dance by Broadway’s brightest talent, making the enchantment of Broadway accessible to all who love the theatre,” said NYC & Company President and CEO Cristyne L. Nicholas. “We are delighted to partner with Target and The League of American Theatres and Producers to bring Broadway to one of New York City’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.”
The Great Lawn in Central Park is host to some of New York City’s most highly anticipated summer events, including public concerts by The New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera as well as one-of-a-kind special events such as the Simon and Garfunkel reunion (1981); Placido in the Park (198
Garth Brooks (1997) and the Dave Matthews Band (2003).
Broadway Under the Stars is made possible by generous support from Title Sponsor Target, Official Sponsors, The New York Times and Time Warner, with additional support from the Music Performance Fund, the Tony Randall Theatrical Fund and telecast sponsor WCBS, who will televise a one-hour special of Broadway Under the Stars on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 7pm.
New York City tourism is a $21 billion industry which generates $5.4 billion in city, state and federal tax revenues, further supporting essential services including the police and fire departments, public education, sanitation services and transportation infrastructure. Visitor spending supports nearly 330,000 jobs in all five boroughs.
Millions of visitors each year enjoy live theater on Broadway, an industry that contributes $4.3 billion to the New York economy, and employs over 45,000 people. From June 2004-2005, 11.53 million tickets were sold to Broadway shows, the fourth highest in the past two decades, grossing nearly $770 million, the second highest amount in recorded history. The 2005-2006 season is well on its way to surpassing these number.

This is one of my favorite events of the year, and it's going to be even more gorgeous in Central Park. I'm not sure if I can make it, but I hope I can.
AHH! I'm actually going to be in the city for this! Nothing is going to stop me from going. I've always wanted to go! I'm so excited.
Not sure if I'll be able to go, but everyone is making me want to, LOL.

Does anyone have information as to when it will be on TV? I live in Boston, and can't go, sadly. The article doesn't say, or maybe I missed it.
ok, ok...but what IS it?
Am I mistaken or did they used to tape this in Bryant Park?
Yes, it used to be in Bryant Park but it's far outgrown that space.
how early do people start getting there

Sigh, I guess it really helps to be living in NY. Coming from L.A., I wasn't able to get to the city in time this year to see Stars in the Alley. I was able to go to the Tonys, but now this Broadway under the Stars comes 11 days after I left to come back to L.A. I have thought of going to the Flea Market in September and could then catch A Chorus Line, but Mary Poppins will not open until the next month. Or if I went out at the time of Mary Poppins, I could catch that and A Chorus Line but the Flea Market will long be done. It's very frustrating.
latheatrelover, I know what you mean. Us out-of-towners have issues!
For everyone who gets to go, have a fantastic time!

catsuit,
WCBS2 will have a one-hour program of it. Basically, it is one performance for each performer. The program should also be on their website.
