"Frenchie was on AI for about five minutes so it was hardly a stepping stone for her."
Actually, her stepping stone was the fact that Frenchie was booted from the show (because of some provacative internet pictures she had posed for) just before the "audience picks" portion of the show as to start, and the outrage that resulted because she had already become an audience favorite in the audition episodes of the show. So I'd say that American Idol was a stepping stone for her, just not in the way you'd expect.
That same season there was more outrage and controversy when Jennifer Hudson got the boot early on (claims of racism by her celebrity fans like Elton John). This made people take notice of her and really paved the way for her getting Effie in Dreamgirls.

Posted: 8/1/06 at 10:50pmSo um. What rumors are flying about Katherine McPhee? All I know is that she was at Spamalot the night I was there, they made two references to her (ie: The knights who say ekki, ekki, ekki, wpong pang, sooooomewhere over the rainbow, you'll always be my american idol), and she spent a long time backstage. But I thought that was normal.

Posted: 8/1/06 at 11:58pmI think it's a good thing. I mean, it sucks for those of us who go to college for Musical Theatre and study and stuff, and they just get the easy way of getting in.. but i guess you could say they worked for it!

A friend of mine was also in Canadian Idol, but this was a few seasons ago. He was in the Top 13 when he was 16 years old (Diana DeGarmo, anyone?) and he's now majoring in MT at Sheridan, I believe. I think he also said he was asked to record for the Hairspray Movie Soundtrack, for some of the ensemble tracks.
OT, Sorry.

Its weird that shneb28 said that your friend got through because of musical theatre. My friends cousin auditioned and was told that they were looking for popstars, not musical theatre stars.
Also someone mentioned earlier that they wished that there was a broadway idol. In the UK, theres "How do you solve a problem like maria?" on the BBC. Its kind of that. Its a reality show trying to find a new maria for the next west end production or something along those lines.

It was a good thing that Justin left GV because Sebastian Arcelus replaced him, and Sebastian was the only highlight in that crappy show.
schneb, I'm afraid that even if your friend wins, she'll end up like the rest of Canadian Idol winners, in oblivion.

Posted: 8/4/06 at 1:41pmI thought Kate R. was the highlight of GV and the songs. It was a fun little show.

Posted: 8/9/06 at 11:14ami think most of the AI losers don't really know what entertainment career to do so, they experiemnt. Notice, not too many stay on Broadway. I think a lot of them are testing the waters. People like Josh Strickland and Frenchie Davis are here to stay. Others like Tamyra were probably just try new things. I think producers also like to bring them into shows because of there large fan bases...I'd love to see Mandisa in RENT now...anyone remember her?

Personally, I think it's a great stepping stone! If the Idol contestant has the chops to pull it off, by all means. I personally HATE it when the judges tell some contestants "You're too Broadway"! They should be THANKING them for having such a great voice. However, I know that Broadway singers don't exactly translate well into 'teeny-bopper, gum popping, mainstream public'.

Posted: 8/9/06 at 12:44pmI wouldn't be surprised if they ask Diana DeGarmo to be one of the next Elphaba's. She got good buzz from her stint in Hairspray, she's coming back when she's done with the Brooklyn tour (which is also getting good buzz for her) and she did West Side Story in California.
