i second the scott nevins suggestion. i went to his show on my trip to nyc and had so much fun. of course i had to suffer through a very hilarious Wendy Ho performance WITH MY MOM!, but i had a ball, all awkward-ness aside.

I love all of the clubs discussed!
What about "The Monster"? Piano bar upstairs, disco below... It has it all. Many straight women with their gay boyfriends. And many straight(!?!) men loooooking for the straight woman.
Oh yeah, my avatar... I have no stake in this club, but 10 years after working there I'm still recognized in the strangest places around the world--Venice, Rome, Bangkok, etc. (OH, don't I know you from the 'Monster'?)
Can't tell you how many times I've been upgraded on flights...
Still, the best club for the price with the music of Broadway, Cabaret, Disco, etc. and the best drink pour in town!
(and, yes, Corine2, a lot of hot sad gay men too, but there is a ladies room when it works...)
EDIT: I meant 10 years after "HAVING WORKED" there, not to imply that I still do work there. Sorry 'bout that.

Stop worrying about it and just go to SBNY. 17th St. between 5th and 6th Avenues. If you don't like it, you can leave. There's no cover on Monday nights (except one random Monday that I happened to stop by - don't know why there was a cover that night), so it's not like you're losing any money. You're there to enjoy the showtunes and videos like the rest of us queens. If you want a table, I suggest getting there early. The place fills up between 7 and 8:30. Have a ball!

Corine, I know you probably don't think so and it wasn't your intention, but that "all the best looking men are gay and I can't have them, it's so depressing" line is, at its core, homophobic.

we are the best looking though!
(obviously not meant as a homophobic comment...i just think gay men are for the most part good looking)

SBNY has no cover before 9pm so be sure to get there before then. After 9 there's a $5(?) cover.
What does "fit in" mean anyway? If you're there and enjoying yourself, isn't that all that matters? My friend (girl) got picked up there a few weeks ago by a guy. Never seen that before, but apparently it happens!

I second Marie's Crisis. There's also Roses Turn, The Duplex and Helens. All fun.

Dear Corrine2,
I'm a gay man and I feel the same way you do about gay bars. ("So many hot men you can't have...")
Not to thread-jack, but would anyone know if "Joe Allen's Restaurant (and I'm assuming "Bar")" that was immortalized in the musical "Applause" is still open?
