Hi all,
I'm looking for your advice for Broadway musical recommendations. I'm a London musical fan and I've seen many of the major and most recent musicals that have been on in the West End. I'm coming to NY for a short trip at the end of the month so a Broadway show visit is a must - but I want to see something that I haven't already seen or that isn't transferring to London. Hamilton would be perfect but I know there's no chance of that! I'll be with my partner, who isn't a particular musical fan but has seen a few and also doesn't want to see something already seen on the stage/as the movie - though I think something more mainstream would still be a better bet. At the moment, I'm considering The Color Purple but do you have any suggestions?
I'm also amazed at the cost of Broadway tickets (I thought the West End was expensive!). Are there any offers or discounts I should be aware of?
Thanks for all help and advice!
And Hamilton just announced they will mount a production in the UK next year.
The Color Purple is reportedly wonderful. Bright Star is old fashioned and sweet. Or try the new (off broadway, Dear Evan Hansen!)
Either of the Bock & Harnicks.

Color Purple is great. Top notch performances and I cried my eyes out. Much better than the original.
She Loves Me is absolutely endearing and wonderful, but not sure if it would fit the bill if this person is not a fan of musicals. It's a classic musical/love story. the score is very musical theater. If you think your companion would enjoy that, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it!!
What kind of music does this person enjoy? There is so much variety on Broadway now there is something for every taste.
For discounts try theatremania and Broadway box. Between the two of those, you can usually find most shows with a discount floating around. If you know what show you want to see, just google the show's name with "discount code." And if you're not set on a particular show, you could always wait and hit the TKTS booth to see what had the best seats/discount. (However TKTS discounts are from the top price so you can also get cheaper seats ahead of time if you are willing to take seats that aren't very good.)
If the person isn't a fan of musicals, he should should just **** off and find his own thing to do. Don't pander to him. Or better yet, give him a chance to change his mind.
She Loves Me, Something Rotten!, and The King and I are all super-safe (and super amazing) bets.

Thanks everyone for your advice - and thrilled that Hamilton is coming to London next year!
If I'm interpreting your situation correctly, I think Something Rotten is simply crying out to you as the perfect choice. If your partner is British, even if he doesn't particularly like musicals he should be blown away by the funny story of Shakespeare's challengers writing a musical. And if you ARE a fan of musicals, all the references will have you rolling in the aisles.
