Theatre lovers are in for a treat this summer when Great Performances airs BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II. Premiering on WNET in New York on Monday, August 9th at 8:00PM, BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II will air on PBS stations around the country as part of their August pledge drive programming (check local listings). Last year, PBS viewers made BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES the #1 broadcast of their Summer Pledge Drive. This summer, even more riches are unearthed in BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II, a second edition collection of rare musical performances taken from The American Theatre Wing's Tony Award broadcasts. These musical performances have gone unseen since their original telecasts until now. The Tony Awards are presented by the League of American Theatres and Producers and the American Theatre Wing.

BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II, produced by Christopher A. Cohen to honor the Actors Fund of America, presents an exceptional line-up of the brightest stars of the American musical theatre performing their signature numbers. This unique visual record of show-stoppers by original cast members features Bea Arthur, Nell Carter, George Hearn, Gregory Hines, Michael Jeter, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Robert Morse, Jerry Orbach, Juliet Prowse, Chita Rivera, Colm Wilkinson, Shirley Verrett and others in musical performances from Tony winning and nominated productions including, Ain't Misbehavin', Anything Goes, Carousel, Chicago, Grand Hotel, Guys and Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Les Miserables, Mame, Man of La Mancha, Sweet Charity. BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II is hosted by Tony winners Lauren Bacall (Applause, Woman of the Year), Bebe Neuwirth (Sweet Charity, Chicago), Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me, Kate).

BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II is divided into three sections: "The Leads," "Revivals and Record Breakers" and "All Singing! All Dancing!"

Dreamgirls was supposed to be on the first one, but John Breglio of the Bennett estate had it pulled at the last minute. I don't think we'll be seeing it on DVD anytime soon.

It made the cut on my PBS station because I got it on tape.

You were lucky -- it was pulled literally the afternoon before it was to be shown in nearly every other market including New York. Not sure exactly what Breglio's motives are (I've heard several theories), but I think it's a shame to deprive people of seeing perhaps the greatest Tony moment (and one of the great stage moments, period) because of "rights issues." As for me, I've had my own copy of it since the original telecast, but I wouldn't mind having it on DVD, if Breglio will ever allow it to happen.

That does actually strike me as a little odd. I would think that they would want to promote PHANTOM as much as possible now.

I loved the first one. I adore Jerry Orbach. However I thought some of te dance numbers were strange. They didn't pick the most impressive pieces.

"And I'm Telling You..." was shown the first time it was aired on PBS in the Atlanta market. In subsequent encore airings, it was deleted. I was disappointed that this song didn't make it on the first Lost Treasures DVD. I am glad that I got a chance to hear Jennifer sing this song live once. Great stuff!

I can't wait for the Lost Treasures 2 to premiere on PBS. It looks like I'll be renewing my membership soon!
