I work at a bookstore, and it was hidden from me when it first came in (everyone knows how I am:))
The cover is GORGEOUS...half is old Times Square and the other half is modern-day. It's pricey ($60) but worth it!

I bought the book and the DVD pack from Amazon.co...was much cheaper. So far I've only gotten the book and it is wonderful!!
Spider, can I ask you another question about the DVD (I'm really curious)? Do they show something about "Passion"?

Fae,
How much narrating is done by Julie? I've heard that it is only a minimal amount..

There is nothing about PASSION or ON THE 20TH CENTURY on the DVD. The DVD has several hours more material than will be shown on PBS including THE MAKING OF WICKED.
I've only watched the third disc and I was a bit disappointed. Most of the clips are from Tony shows (especially numbers that are on BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES) or from movie versions. I thought BROADWAY THE GOLDEN AGE was much more entertaining and there was more material I hadn't seen before. I understand that the other discs are better than the last. There was hardly anything on the third disc I hadn't seen or heard before. I did love seeing Chita and Gwen doing the Hot Honey Rag again and some (too little though) of the CHORUS LINE segment from the Tonys that was supposed to be on the first BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES.

rayoflight- from what i've watched so far, julie narrates the beginning of each segment. not nearly enough, but just hearing her voice releases some kind of feel good endorphins for me.

Posted: 10/13/04 at 3:26pmI was reading reviews of this set on Amazon and they're less than stellar. They were saying how too much of the footage is taken from movies. Can you tell me what kind of movie footage is used because I thought this special was all about the stage.

About the movie clips, when they talked about shows that they probably didn't have any footage for and there was a movie made, they used the clips. The only ones I can remember is mainly in the Bob Fosse segment. They showed a clip of the Pajama Game's "Steam Heat," "Who's got the Pain" but only because Bob Fosse himself was in that clip, and it showed like a montage of the original, revival, and movie of CHICAGO to show how Fosse's choreography still lives on. They mainly use clips from the show or Tony Awards. I think the deal is with most people is that they are judging it on the third disk. It is not as "Documentary" as the rest because it is of the theatre today. On Disk 1 and 2, they show rare clips and make it has more of a documentary feel to it. I love it myself. I think this and the BROADWAY GOLDEN AGE go hand in hand with each other.
I was kind of upset that it just mentioned the name of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals (even though there was like a 3 second segment on CATS). Instead, they just mentioned the titles of his shows as well as Les Miserables in connection with Cameron Mitchell. BUT, they stayed on Sondheim's flops for like 10 minutes. They clearly picked favorites here. But, besides that it is really great.

Could that possibly be because the Documentary is called - Broadway: The AMERICAN Musical and Webber and MACKINTOSH are not American but Sondheim is, and in most circles (throughout the world) he is regarded as the greatest American Broadway composer?
