Posted: 10/13/04 at 6:55pmWell, if what you stated was true, then they would not have had a segment on Cameron Mackintosh. Also, I was not complaining that they talked about Sondheim I am just saying that they could have talked about other people and not so much on him. I mean, I understand talking about his hits, but not 20-30 mintues on his flops. Also, Webber brought money to the broadway stage when it was in turmoil in the 80's. But, I mean you have other actors or composers that were important, but they were not mentioned because so much time was on Sondheim.

Having not received my DVDs as of yet, I will reserve comment until after I've had a chance to see it and can speak to it with knowledge. I was really only asking the question based on your prior post.
For those who are interested in the complete package, you can find it here:

I was not trying to attack you or anything (sorry if it seemed that way). I think Sondheim is good but he is not the be all/end all of musical theatre. I mean, they could have shown Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone, etc. instead of so much time on him. I am in the minority here, but that is what I think.
And they spent WAY too much time on the Producers and Wicked. I mean, there was a special feature about Wicked, so I thought it was stupid to show as much as they did on the actual segment. What about the up and coming composers (Brown, Guettel, Lippa, etc)? None of them were mentioned. The third disk is the worst out of the three.

Posted: 10/13/04 at 7:21pmOk...I am headed to Borders in about 20 minutes...will they sell the set there, do ya think? Or can the set only be purchased on the PBS store site?

Posted: 10/13/04 at 7:22pmYou can buy them indivdually at other places but as a set in can only be bought at the PBS store. I would do it that way. It is cheaper in the long run to order all of that from the PBS store.

Posted: 10/13/04 at 7:25pmI dont think I want the CD though...Just the DVD and the book...can the "free" CD be purchased seperatley as well or does it just come with the pack? Why are there 2 different types of CDs on Amazon? One has barely any songs and one has, I believe, 5 disks! So confused...

Posted: 10/14/04 at 4:03pmI was disappointed that disc three focused on so few shows and that they failed to tell us much that was new about them. But they were focusing on the shows that they felt were instumental in changing the Broadway musical. So naturally there was a focus on Sondheim during this perios. I wish they had explored the tranformation from the R & H period to Sondheim shows more. I was surprised that there was so little on GYPSY. And most of Sondheim's hits--FORUM, LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, INTO THE WOODS--were only shown in photos. The shows of his they chose to explore--WEST SIDE STORY, COMPANY, SUNDAY and SWEENEY--are groundbreaking and only SUNDAY could be called "a flop".

Its a great DVD! The book is wonderful too but its HUGE! The DVD has a lot on WICKED which I am not complaining about! But, theres like nothing on HAIRSPRAY or anyother really good shows. Still worth buying!
