pab, sorry. There is a problem though here you guys if you think that George Hearn is just as or more famous than Joey Gray. This is not the case. George wins Tony Awards and he is known in the theatre world. Joey Grey wins Academy Awards and is known in the mainstream and motion pictures(as well as theatre) There is a big difference there. I think if there's something I understand a little better than some people on this board it's the difference between theatre culture and popular culture. If you think most people in that audience(tourists) knew who George Hearn was I think you're wrong. It's nothing agianst him. I think he's great. He was in the first Broadway show I ever saw. I know there are some people on this this board that ONLY think within the Broadway world and I have gotten yelled at before by Broadway freaks because I did not know who Carolee Caramello is. I will say it again. Theatre people are not normal. I am not normal. There's nothing wrong with that. I mean it in a fun way anyway.

I don't even know what to say.
None of my friends know Joel Grey or George Hearn...
Joel Grey did one big movie a LONG time ago!
I think they're about even.
The theatre world IS it's own world. The audience more often than not knows the performers. Although, usually, an audience member may have been told prior to the show that a certain performer is famous in the theatre world.

"George Hearn? I’ve heard of him but why did he get an applause? Do other people know who he is?"
My main point was an answer to your question. You asked "why did he get an applause?" He must have gotten the applause because the members of the audience recognized him. Maybe most of them there were theatre people but it's obvious that they knew and appreciated what he has done in the theatre and on television, hence the applause.

Yeah, If CABARET was the only movie Joey Grey did he still won an Acadmey Award and I think he is a little more fmaous than George Hearn. I just want people to know what i mean when I say "normal people" ans the "real world" I don't mean offense to Broadway or you guys but Broadway it's own little world and people outside of it(Hollywood) are the majority. Does everyone realize that outside Broadway, people do not know who Idina Menzel is?!?!?!?! Don't spend too many hours on this site you guys! Sometimes I am guilty though of thinking the world exists between the east and hidson rivers.

Yeah and to refer to PSYC 101, we all know that a lot of times there is a mass applause because an individual starts it and others instinctively join.

I dont think anyone is claiming that either George Hearn or Joel Gray are mega-star household names. Most people probably don't know who either of them are. And I think as a whole, Broadway fans are PAINFULLY aware that most people don't care about musicals the way we do and don't know who Idina Menzel is.

OK
Does everyone know who Benjamin McKenzie is? No.
If you read a lot of Bway actors interviews, they say that they went into the theatre knowing they wouldn't become massive stars like Brad Pitt - it's one of the reasons why many Bway actors migrate to TV that and to make money)!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think the whole point that sparked this argument is that if you didn't know who someone was, you could easily read about them and their accolades in the playbill. In fact, I believe that's what the point of the bios are.

I honestly think they both get applause for the character they're playing (Wizard of Oz) NOT what people remember of them from past acheivments. Elphaba also gets a round of applause when she enters and she's much less known than George or Joel...
Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH! 8/21/05

bronx will say just about anything to stir up trouble.
Couple of things:
"The Wicked theatre" is called the Gershwin. I sat in the upper balcony and had no problem with the view.
Idina doesn't "scream". That is just a word used by those who don't care for her voice or want to say something nasty. If you don't know what a scream is, just say "President Cheney" and you'll hear what one actually sounds like.
Understudies are "real people". Just ask Shirley MacLaine.

Or Liza Minnelli.
And as for bronxbound's comment about how he was yelled at because he didn't know Carolee Carmello's name, well here's the thing. You weren't yelled at for not knowing, you were yelled at for calling her "this Caroline Caramel person" and thinking it was funny. It wasn't. Just as you referring to Terra Mcleod in Chicago as a dumb ass dipSH*T bitch who can't sing wasn't funny either.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I believe bronxbound probably has another personality on this board. In fact, I'm willing to bet as much.

I saw the show last night and I too was surprised that George Hearn got applause but only because my row was going crazy for him.
This was my second time seeing the show and JLT didn't get applause when she entered when I saw the saw in September. This time she did and that made me smile.
Of course, when Miss Elphaba enter the crowd went crazy.
kind of o/t - but still Wicked related.
I brought my friend to the show for her birthday and before we went the two songs that she hated were "Popular" and "For Good" because she teaches at a performing arts camp and Wicked was the soundtrack of this past summer. But after the show she didn't mind the songs anymore.

Mister Matt:
I luv Idina like a sister (which is somewhat true)
She does scream and she knows she does. In Wicked - she does not. In Aida she does!

As great as that is....for you....NEVER again wait at the Stage Door before a show - it's rude to the actors!

i kind of find it hard to believe that JLT copied what kristin did with Glinda when JLT never saw kristin perform as Glinda...

I don't think she copied her....
I feel there isn;t much interpretation needed from the written part and the direction.
I think it happens naturally.
