Ute is an Oliver Award winner for Velma Kelly.

And she is a fantastic jazz vocalist, maybe you should check out her solo albums.

And she is one hell of a dancer.

On my OLC, and my um "archival tracks" of Ute - she nails every number vocally. And the clips they show of her performing the numbers on her DVD, she was just splendid.

Ute isn't for everyone. And that's for sure. I know Wonderboy here didn't enjoy her that much. But that dosen't mean she is awful. This one board I go to with a bunch of Chicago fanatics, who have seen the show 60 + times, have told me they feel Ute was one of the best Velmas.

Hmm...a blonde Velma and a brunette Roxie...

She certainly looks and sounds good. Christopher McDonald also seems PERFECT as Billy Flynn.

I've seen CHICAGO well over 100 times and now I don't live in NYC anymore. I've been depressed about not getting to see new shows (WICKED, SPAMALOT, SPELLING BEE, etc.) but now I am WAY depressed to not get to see this show right now! (I got to play Mary Sunshine here locally a couple of years ago, though).

I would LOVE it if they did a new recording with Brooke. She sounded amazing on the video clip. I'm not sure if I like the wig, though. They could get great people from throughout the history of the run to play all the parts. Sharon Lawrence as Velma, Mary Testa as Mama, Ernie Sabella as Amos, Michael Berresse as Billy Flynn. (Just a few suggestions).

You can never have too many recordings of a brilliant score like this. I have every English language cast recording (and the soundtrack) and ripped tracks from all of them to make MY ultimate CHICAGO recording. I even have me as Mary Sunshine (insert Narcissist joke here) and Liza Minnelli doing the Roxie monologue. Bebe, Chita, Catherine Zeta Jones, Ute Lemper as Velma/ Gwen, Ann, Liza, Ruthie, Renee as Roxi/, Jerry, James, Michael, Richard as Billy/ Joel, Barney as Amos/ Marsha, Queen Latifah as Mama... you get the idea. I would love to be able to add a new recording in and decide which new tracks to use.

Okay, now that you know I have NO life.... who would you choose to make up an ultimate CHICAGO recording. NOT someone who has recorded it before, someone who has played the role on Broadway and you would love to hear on CD?!?!!??!?

Well she is well into her run, and she leaves at the end of October.

So, I have a feeling the critics aren't going to be invited.

brooke has *amazing* cheekbones. i LOVE the way her facial features are enhanced with the wig. i think that it was a great move. appearance-wise, anyways. :)

Why weren't the critics invited, I mean they invited critics for Melanie Griffith?! I like Brooke with the wig, she does look hot (well she is extremely hot) but I looove her hair! They should definitely make a recording of the show with Brooke's performance or tape the show for commercial release like they should've done with "Wonderful Town"!
Also, it's the first time I hear a negative opinion about Ute's Velma, my ex-boyfriend saw her opening night when she opened the show in London, and said her kicks and dancing skills were mesmerizing.

IMO Ute was perfection. She was very funny, her comic timing was perfect, her dancing was graceful, energetic and technically very good and her singing was as good as it sounds on the CD. She was also very nice at the stage door. She was also very sexy and brought some of her Dietrich-ish sexual ambiguity to the role, which made Velma much more fascinating.

But she and Luba sound great together!
