Posted: 12/6/04 at 2:01pmMidtown, when people stood up after Ideden finished that SCREECHING song "Once Upon A Time" other people were yelling at them to sit down and booing. It was absolutely the funniest thing I've ever seen. It's just a shame my ears still bleed occasionally.

Posted: 12/6/04 at 8:32pmIt reminds me of that line from "Musical of Musicals the Musical": "the audience applauds the scene change"-they were making fun of ALW, but it is so true these days. You have a chandelier come down-the audience will applaud, you have a snow machine -the audience will applaud-you walk around in trash bags and sing really high-you get a standing ovation. It's the fail-me-not fool-proof way....

Posted: 12/6/04 at 11:01pmthere USED to be an audience for smart, challenging theater. When you compare the thought-provoking Caroline or Change to the the brain cell killing Brooklyn and then consider that Brooklyn may run longer, it's depressing. I guess 50 years of TV and 20 years of video games really has dumbed us down.

"there USED to be an audience for smart, challenging theater"
Not necessarily. Remember that West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and Gypsy were not that successful (in terms of finance and attendance) in their day. All of them closed in under two years. My Fair Lady, Best Little Whorehouse and Sound of Music all were bigger hits respectively despite being less challenging works.

OK that's it!!!
Don't you people have something else in life to do instead of bashing brooklyn in every single theard?
Many people think BKLYN is a brilliant, amazing, creative great show (including me and all of the BKLYN fans, and believe it or not, there are many)
And just for the record - no BKLYN fan started this theard, so don't say we can't stop talking about it 24hrs a day (we have the fans forum for that!)

The NY Times reports that plays, which are more challenging than musicals, are having a difficult time being produced. It's very scary.

Mister Matt, you are right. I look at the list below of the longest running Broadway Musicals and I have to say that, IMHO, only four of them are challenging works and the rest of them just had gimmicks that moved them along.
Cats
The Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
A Chorus Line
Oh! Calcutta (1976 Revival)
Beauty and the Beast
Miss Saigon
Rent
42nd Street
Grease
