Brookyln: The Musical

Hi, I'm new here... check out my profile if you want to learn about me Brookyln: The Musical But, anyway, I've been wondering if Brooklyn: The Musical is any good. I heard Once Upon a Time at the Tony Awards and it seemed really good, but if you look at reviews for the show/cast recording, they aren't too hot. Would any of you recommend it?

Thanks!
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

re: Brookyln: The Musical

First of all welcome!:)

Second of all you will learn that it is very easy to aggrivate long time members here. Ways of doing that is asking something without using the search feature and the other way is talking about Brooklyn! lol I will sum it up for you. While some did like the musical, most felt it was the piece of trash that had been sitting on the Broadway curb for way too long. I personally love the music to it but so feel the plot is very less to be desired.

So, welcome and use that search feature, otherwise be ready for the wrath that is BWW.COM message board!:)
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

re: Brookyln: The Musical

Well, it's closed. So unless you're in one of the cities that the tour will be hitting, you won't be able to see it.

I saw the show twice. The first time I went in knowing nothing about it and enjoyed myself. Then I bought the recording, listened to it once through and still liked it. Then I saw it again when my school got $30 tickets and wanted to slit my wrists by the time "Magic Man" came on.

The cast recording is pretty much the entire show, including dialogue. It's only missing about 15-20 minutes. But it's not all that great. It can be fun to listen to once, but it'll get on your nerves.

Oh dear.

(To your post AND your username - by the latter, though, I am intrigued. Disturbed, yet intrigued. I leave it at that.)

I am pretty sure it was a little clip in the montage of musicals not nominated

Well because of that clip I bought the cd. Loved that song. But after listening to the whole cd once, not a huge fan. Don't think it was worth it other than to just have in my collection.

I'm with SueleenGay. I'll pray for you as well. To be honest, I couldn't even sit through the album. However, I can definitely see why it appeals to the younger crowd. The only thing I really liked about it was the schpeel Paradice gives commenting on America. I loved that part.

Perfectliar, just curious as to what made you change your mind about the show. Usually it's the opposite, not liking something at first, but then growing to like it. Thanks.

I never saw the show, and never really had the desire to either.

re: Brookyln: The Musical

I saw this show from the front row knowing very little about it. I really enjoyed it for what it was. It's not on the same level as, say, almost anything else on broadway aside from Good Vibrations, but I enjoyed it.

However, I cannot STAND the recording. It's one of the worst in my collection. I'd rather listen to the Sarah Jessica Parker revival of One Upon A Mattress!

re: Brookyln: The Musical

Sheesh, I wasn't aware there was such a high level of animosity. Thanks to everyone for welcomes and the... er... input. But you didn't have to jump down my throat. It's not like I was saying it was the greatest musical ever; I was just wondering if it was worth looking into or not.

Anyway, I couldn't see it even if I wanted to (and, trust me, if I were able to see a Broadway show there are others I'd rather see) I was just wondering if I should check out the cast recording or not. Apparently it's a definite "not" so I'll save my money for DRS and/or Spelling Bee instead. So you don't have to pray for me, after all. I do thank you for the concern over the state of my musical soul, however.

re: Brookyln: The Musical

Dottie - Mostly I just became bored with it. The music seemed different and unique upon first listening. Then with repeated exposure it sort of just became monotonous and uninteresting. After sitting through the entire show for the second time, I also fully realized how subpar the plot and book really were.

I still do like some parts of it though (like Paradice's monologue on the state of American, as mentioned by others) and enjoy some songs (Kevin Anderson was wonderful and I love his "Sometimes" as well as Ramona's "Raven").
