Brynn O'Malley as Mary Poppins
re: Brynn O'Malley as Mary Poppins#25
Posted: 5/14/08 at 6:58pmAnd Susan Egan only doing replacements? OK, she's not Broadway's biggest star but she's had a good career - she was a sitcom regular, the voice of Meg in Hercules as well as a few anime characters for studio Ghibli movies. She's released albums and is still popular with many here on the boards. OK, she isn't walking the red carpets of Hollywood but she's been pretty successful.

Brynn is fantastic. ...Definitely not a newcomer, though.
I'm sure she'd be fantasic as Mary Poppins, but I'd love to see her in a larger role in something other than Disney material.

I too have trouble seeing them cast the replacement so far in advance. It would make sense if they bumped up Walker or Megan. If only because they have experience doing the role and both of them have done it before.
I think that if they are going to do anything like bump someone up. I think it would be Walker over Megan. Only because Walker is the first understudy.

Posted: 5/15/08 at 12:37amYea, Walker has been on all week this week and last week with the exception of one show when Meg went on. I'm not sure what goes into the decision, but usually Catherine goes on before Meg does. But Cat as the glamour doll always rocks so for that reason alone I hope they choose someone else when Ashley leaves. Dumb reason, but o well.

Posted: 5/15/08 at 4:10amYour support for your friend is admirable, but your facts are incorrect. Many months after the show opened, Ms. Osterhaus was picked out of the ensemble to U/S for MP; after Ms. Carbone began to U/S for Mrs. Banks. From first contract, Catherine Walker was cast as Ensemble and MP U/S. She made her debut as MP on 3/17/07, which was before Ms. Osterhaus even began learning the role.

I just watched the clips of Brynn in 'Meet Me In St. Louis'. I can see why one would think she'd make a great Mary Poppins. She has a way about her that would fit the role very well and has the right look. Lovely voice as well with a commanding personality.
BWayJunkie mentioned that Catherine has been on all this week. Is Ashley currently on vacation or is she just performing on certain nights? I'm going to see the show a week from now on Friday May 23. Will Ashley most likely appear that night?
Thanks.

Bynn O'Malley is such a talented performer. She nabbed a Helen Hayes Award nomination last year for playing Amalia at Arena Stage.
I had the pleasure of podcasting her at Sunday In The Park last month where she plays Dot 1. I hope you enjoy it. Joel

Brynn is a wonderful, truly talented performer. Unfortunately, I have not seen her perform since she was in high school and college at U-M - but even as a high schooler, she was a stand out as "Marion the Librarian" in The Music Man. I can only imagine how far she has come in her professional career.
This young woman is talent plus.
This being said, it doesn't mean that there are not others that could do the Mary Poppins role; I am just partial to our "hometown" talent who would be terrific.
What amazes me even more is the caliber of talent that the various stages showcases - and what a shame that, unlike movies and television, the real talent is not sufficiently, financially rewarded. In movies and television even the manufacturered talent can make huge salaries....I am sure I am not the only one to bemoan this fact.
Yet, the talent on the stages continue - the actors/singers/dancers/writers/directors/ choreographers etc. showcase not only their talent but their love of their crafts and we the audience are the beneficiaries!
Thanks to you all!

I saw this thread bumped and got SO excited. Blah.
The Wicked gig was only temporary, but many said she was one of, if not the, best Nessa they've seen. Hopefully she lands something good soon!
