Can someone explain, because I'm genuinely curious and not in a bad way, what the thought behind doing these revivals while it's playing on Bway. I didn't think the Signature was that far from NYC yet they've done Into the Woods and Sweeney while the respective Bway productions were running...

They had the rights before the Bway productions were announced, and the Bway producers did not think it necessary to pull the rights. They cater to a mostly DC-local audience, most of whom won’t go to NYC (or can’t get tix to Sweeney in NYC).

If anyone travels to DC to catch Sweeney in late June/early July, Studio Theatre is doing Fun Home from June 28-July 30 and they tend to do excellent productions.

It's interesting to note that they had also planned on doing "Merrily" this year but the rights to that were pulled even though it would not have run during the same period.

Personally I can't wait to see what they do with the show. So far, just this season, both "Into the Woods" and "Pacific Overtures" were far better productions than the Broadway revivals. Nobody does Sondheim better than Signature.
