I don't know. I'm still scratching my head. Even if Woody were such a racist, I can't imagine him being so stupid to blatantly make such a statement to the public. I'm wondering why no blacks at all.

And none of the dancers in the Kit Kat Club in Cabaret are black, and none of the dancers in After Midnight are white, etc.? If anyone wants to make a broader point about color-blind casting here (although given these are all period pieces it wouldn't work as much as a piece where that isn't a factor), that would be fine. But calling out this show on the day it opens seems not to be coincidental.

Would people be less outraged if they had cast two black actresses for that 8 second scene, and that was all they did all night? One watching of The Sopranos set 50+ years later, and it would seem little has changed as far as racial integration in fictional mob stories.

I can't recall whether scenes after they said they would go to the Cotton Club later, etc., actually happened in the Cotton Club, or if a later scene then just happened in Nick's Club and people are connecting those two things incorrectly.

There's one black actress in the show, and I can't imagine this article saying there are no black performers in the show is making her opening day and night much fun.

^ YES! I was looking at my Playbill last night, and I remember that there is a black actress.

Regardless, people need to get over being so sensitive about race. I didn't notice it at all when I watched the show, I just enjoyed the story line and the performances.

Amazing, the show has been playing for weeks, and this trash article to come out on opening night is just so wrong. As pointed out in earlier posts, the only scene in the Cotton Club is a 30 second one over the stage, and the dancer's backs are to the audience. It is set in the 20's, racial separation was a reality.
Also as someone pointed out. How many white dancers are there in After Midnight. Just checked my Playbill for Gentleman's Guide. Guess what, it's lily white. Don't recall seeing anyone calling them out.

Is there a rule I am unaware of that depending on the size of the cast there has to be so many Blacks, Asians, Gays.... you get the point.

People can feel however the hell they want about race, as it IS a sensitive issue. Perhaps you didn't notice, but others may have, and were still able to enjoy the performance but had an issue with it. That's ok too.

That isn't something odd thing that was invented for the show, though. That was an actual rumor at the time, apparently. You can Google it, and it comes up...

I get annoyed by race discussions because I've grown up hearing I'm either not white enough or black enough... whatever that means. Thanks to my parents, I know that just being me is "enough."

The fact that there are no white dancers in After Midnight isn't really relevant to this discussion considering that a. the show is meant to be like a Cotton Club revue (and yes, I know the Cotton Club had white guest stars but the performers were predominantly black) and b. there isn't exactly a lack of work for white dancers on Broadway.
