Although the Broadway production closed at a loss in August of 2014, does anyone remember the initial capitalization of the production?
To think that Hamiltion is costing only 7 million to produce and already has an advance of 27 million ( per NY Times) is quite astounding.
What chance does a show like On Your Feet thats capped at 17 million stand?
Such a crapshoot!

17 million would be considered a larger than average capitalization, and I'm not sure of what the odds of OYF being a huge hit are. I don't think it will do poorly, but 17 million is a larger number than some of the mega hits such as Wicked (14 million) or Book of Mormon (11.4 million), and I don't see the same potential in a Gloria Estefan musical.

I would like to see the books on this one. $17M doesn't make sense unless Gloria & Emilio are getting top dollar for using their music in the show or Jerry Mitchell is making $10M of that. No elaborate sets or costumes, not a long development process.

I would think OYF may have a significantly higher upfront ad budget than the typical show. The "look" of a show is not always a good indicator. Also worth noting that the Estefan enterprise and the landlord are the lead producers and in these situations the budget may not be typical although it would be odd for them to have an enormous royalty advance built in.
