Bye Bye Birdie audition song

I know guys you hate seeing these, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a song that's not trite for auditioning for Conrad. I don't want to sing anything from Grease, Hairspray or Footloose and I'm trying to avoid the Pharaoh's Song from Joseph.

Burnin' Love, Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Can't Help Falling in Love with You, Jailhouse Rock, I'm All Shook Up - All Shook Up/Elvis
Prowlin' - Grease 2
Bobby Darin - Splish Splash
Buddy Holly - That'll Be the Day
Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire
Dion & the Belmonts - Teenager in Love
Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman
Ricky Nelson - Last Kiss
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl

Ones that aren't based around the same time period, but might work:
I Got Life - Hair
Night Fever - Saturday Night Fever
Pinball Wizard/I'm Free - Tommy

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

You should defintely look at the songs sung by the artists MrMidwest metioned: Elivs, Bobby Darin, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison. All great suggestions.

I agree. Rather than trying to find a song from a musical, do something from the time period. An Elvis song would be a great choice.
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

An Elvis song? Absolutely!

But get one that you can nail and camp and vamp a bit.

Burning Love or Jailhouse Rock (which can be a very 'naughty' song if done right) pop into my head.

Remember Conrad is a caricature. There is no such thing as over-the-top. Just make sure you sing it like you mean it and not let them know that you're kidding. Honestly sincere and all that. Command their attention. No manic gestures. You're in control.

He's also got some of the best songs in the show.

Oh, and wear tight, really really tight jeans. 501s. Directors sometimes need a push.

Actially, broadway86, I live in OH. A summer in Ohio... *sigh*

I've actually got an outfit together already that feature tight pants. I'm thinking of Sliskcing my hair back, too. Hell, I even have the sideburns left over from Sweeney. Type casting would be easy, hopefully my talent carries.

From Sweeney to Birdie - talk about opposite ends of the spectrum! And just a hint, if the auditioners are picky you could always say the something you're doing from Elvis is from "All Shook Up".
