She's a little old.
Susan too old for the mom? I don't think so! Whether she'd be right for the role, I don't know...
EDIT: Whoops! You were replying to Dolly. I'm sorry!

I think Rosie Prez is a bit too old for Rosie
I don't think Rosie Perez is too old for the part of Rosie at all. In the movie version, both Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh were in their very late thirties (but to me appeared even older than that). I think she could pull it off with no problem, especially if they cast someone around the same age to play Albert.

Rosie Prez is 44 and I do not think they will cast an older Albert
lol....I guess you feel that 44 is ancient? I never percieved either Albert or Rosie to be very young as written. It would actually give them a wider range to cast the teenage roles with some young but experienced performers in their 20's. I feel that performers in their 40's could easily be Albert & Rosie (as long as they can sing and dance)

Yes, Jonathan Tunick is probably going to reduce Ginzler's orchestrations to perhaps 12 to 15 musicians due to financial considerations and I'm certain Mr. Tunick will do the finest job possible. This is probably just a "pipe dream" but wouldn't it be great if some wealthy patron of Roundabout contributed the funds for the full 28 piece original orchestrations? It is unlikely, but it would be great. Can't wait for this production.

As much as I admire Matthew Broderick doing non-singing roles in plays, I do not think his singing voice is up to the standards needed for the role of Albert Peterson. I think he would be the first to admit this because he is a very generous actor. There are far superior choices in the Broadway community that would be better for this leading role. I know Roundabout will make the right choice when casting this show.
Rosie Perez is totally wrong for teh role and it has nothing to do with her age.
I just hope that Birdie is closer towards the END of the season so Karen Olivo could atleast be offered the role.. I think she would be an excellent Rose!
Pianolin717, BYE BYE BIRDIE will be happening at the beginning of the season in the fall.
oh, well then it won't be Karen then, darn :/ oh well! Hope I'm still somehow able to come up and see this!!!

I'm just looking forward to the CD. A crystal clear George Costanza-less recording of these songs will be amazing...
The OBC and OLC are pretty great and, as you say, "George Constanza-less.

Oh, I'm not harping on the OBC, which is fantastic, I'm just looking forward to one that sounds sharp, and well, new...

Jackie Hoffman would be an interesting Mae Peterson...
Some would argue that Bye Bye Birdie was recording during the finest days of the Cast Recording as an art form.
Chita was sick when they recorded the OBC. That's why I like to play her tracks from the OLC where she sounds better (next to some really awful American accents from the British teens).
I like DOLLYPOP's idea of casting Mary Louise Wilson as Mae Peterson. She is capable of being very funny and over the top as evidenced in her one woman show FULL GALLOP about fashion designer Diana Vreeland. And she was stripper Tessie Tura in the Angela Lansbury GYPSY in the mid 1970's.
I am a huge fan of Karen Olivo but I don't think she is particularly appropriate for Rosie. Andrea Burns would be a better choice in my book.
Jackie Hoffman as Mae is an excellent choice.

To all debating the ages: Albert is 33. It says so in the first scene. And I hope Albert is short, schlubby, and Jewish. I know Peterson isn't to Jewish a name, but look at his mother, for cripes sake.
Just as long as there are tight-golden pants involved in some way, I will be satisfied.
