"I think it's a shame they cut"Why Should I Wake Up?" from the revival, though - it's so beautiful."
Agreed---I used it as an audition piece for quite a while after doing that show!
We did the '98 revival version and the director specifically added the song so I'd have something to sing besides a little bit of "Perfectly Marvelous."
Gosh, I'm gonna have to break out all my CABARET recordings now and give them a listen. It's been a while.
In all reality, I had the '98 revival cast album. Truth be told, I was around 10 (turning 11) while it ran, and I would spend weeknights singing "Wilkomen" to my family and guests and such ... I don't have the album anymore. It got lost with 'x' amount of other 'goodies' -- Nevertheless, I thank you ALL so very, very much for your feedback.
I'm roundabout 5'7". I'm a tenor. Well, that's what I consider myself, though oftentimes, I'm billed as a 'bari-tenor' - I'm curious as to what role I should go for?

^ Bravo to your director for realizing Cliff needs some singing-time! Seriously, I feel so bad for the character. And in the production I worked on, we had the nicest guy playing Cliff... he was so talented and so great, but I just felt so bad for him because outside of a verse in "Perfectly Marvelous" and a verse in the Finale, he didn't get to showcase his voice.
However, we also had a fantastic Emcee and Sally... and the rest of the cast was amazing. They were so great that I wish someone had made a cast recording! But at least we have production pictures... so that's better than nothing.
Just recently I was on an audition and I had a Cabaret theme (with the exception of "I Move On") - my monologue was Fraulein Schneider's ("There was a war...") and my ballad was "I Don't Care Much".
Mike -- DEFINITELY go for The Emcee, Cliff or any of the boys - preferably Bobby because he gets featured in "Two Ladies"(of course that depends on what the director wants or what the script calls for).

Fun, PM!
I think I'll have to whip out the "Tomorrow Belongs To Me (Reprise)" and pretend I'm back on stage.

A bari-tenor could very well handle the vocal demands of the Emcee, if that's what you're wondering. It doesn't go particularly high.
Cliff's music (what there is of it) doesn't go very high, either. "Why Should I Wake Up?" gets a LITTLE range-y. It's a sweeping, romantic ballad that requires a fairly "legit" voice. I'm a solid baritone and had no problem, so a bari-tenor could easily handle it.
Which role were you leaning toward?

I can play the accordion part for that song...at least for the first two verses. The third one always messes me up.

PerfectlyMarvelous, I would love to see your production photos!
And you're right--I'd totally forgotten that Cliff sings a little reprise of "Wilkommen" at the very end.
PM, that is positively fabulous. I knew I liked you!
Definitely go for Emcee. Man, I would kill to play that role.
Ah, awesome, awesome!
Yeah, I'd LOOOOOVE to play The Emcee!
As far as 'high notes' go, I can reach a high-C, so I'm not scared there. I mean, it's weird, as comfortable as I am with the high notes, I'm known for a solid lower register, too. I digress. I mean, selected theatrial credits range from 'Jaen Valjean' in LesMiz to 'The Boss' in SIDE SHOW -- All over the placel. I love challenging myself ... Thanking you kindly for your words of encouragement, my friends.
Is there much difference in the attire for the Emcee?
I wasn't fortunate enough to catch the OBC or the Revival for that matter (I was born in '87, and yeah, I missed out). What's his deal, really? How is supposed to come off? If it's not too much, any auditoin song suggestions?
You guys are wonderful!!
Best,
- Mike

Cabaret bringin' people together. It's great!
And since this a Cabare thread, I might as well post some production photos for you, LoringsGuy;
"Willkommen!"
"Mein Herr"
"Frenchie is like a croissant. Hot and tasty..."
"Sally and Cliff"

Is there much difference in the attire for the Emcee?
Yes.
In the original production, he wears a suit and make-up sort of resembling a marionette (sp?) - more formal, "master of ceremonies" attire.
In the revival (or pictures above), he wears pants with suspenders attached to them... sort of a deconstructed/debauched look. Also, he wears a dress for the song, "I Don't Care Much".

Possible audition songs: something showy that shows humor, maybe something from 42nd Street, maybe another Kander and Ebb song...I'm blanking on specifics at the moment.

The Emcee is very multi-faceted. He needs to be by turns charming, cute, pathetic, sinister, and strung out. It's a deceptively complex role! Definitely more interesting than Cliff, who really exists as an observer. Cliff has some very dramatic scenes, particularly near the end of the show, but the Emcee is a much "showier" role.
PM, are those photos from the production you were in? Is that Andrea McArdle as Sally?? Who is the Emcee?
The new London revival CD is pretty good too. The songs are rearranged in some cases, but it's still a nice addition to any collection... here's the track list if anyone is interested...
01. Willkomen
02. So What?
03. Don't Tell Mamma
04. Mein Herr
05. Perfectly Marvellous
06. Two Ladies
07. It Couldn't Please Me More
08. Transition (Why Should I Wake Up?/I Don't Care Much)
09. Maybe This Time
10. Tomorrow Belongs to Me
11. Entr'acte
12. Married
13. Tomorrow Belongs to Me (reprise)/The Money Song
14. Married (reprise)
15. If You Could See Her
16. What Would You Do?
17. I Don't Care Much
18. Cabaret
19. Finale
Who's on the recording/How are the performances?
PM, are those photos from the production you were in? Is that Andrea McArdle as Sally?? Who is the Emcee?
Yep, it's Andrea! The Emcee is Jon Peterson (he's a very sweet person).
I was just on deck crew, but all us crew girls got to dress up "Kit Kat-ty", especially on the last night. You can't really tell in this picture, but I had on a black dress with fishnets on my arms;
I still need to get the new London recording. That and the OLC, although that one is a little hard to come by from what I understand.

PM, was this the NY production, or was it done regionally somewhere?
The photos are awesome. Gosh, I really miss this show now!
you can hear samples on the website, gumbo.

It was a regional production in Ogunquit. We were one of the few regional theatres to re-create the look and feel of the 1998 revival, so it was a pretty cool experience.
...I still sort of miss it.
Ah, well. Life goes on.

you mean legally? because pretty much everyone does it that way now... even high schools apparently.
Yes, legally.
(I should have mentioned it was done at the Ogunquit Playhouse). Everyone in the cast had either done the show on Broadway or had been in the first national tour.

PM, thank you for posting all the 'perfectly marvelous' pictures. I'm feeling all nostalgic now!
I looveee the new London production, I think it's beautiful and terrifying. I actually think it's even better than the Broadway revival, which I loved too.
The London recording is also great. I think Anna Maxwell Martin is a fantastic Sally, although opinions on her have been very mixed. She definitely played the role VERY differently to Liza or any of the actresses I saw at Studio 54.
