Car Wash was a musical?!?! I don't recall anyone actually breaking out into song...:
Though the iconic 1976 film CAR WASH wasn't a musical, it was originally intended as a Broadway musical. Universal Pictures bought the rights and took out the entire musical element and made it a regular comedy.
They broke out into song once. The Pointer Sisters sang "You Gotta Believe in Somethin'"

It wasn't a musical but the movie used the pop songs to point up the action of the film. This might be an early example of what we now take for granted - pop song being the majority of the score to a movie.

The best performance by the Pointer Sisters ever. This was a tour de force of casting. "Take the chain off your brain"
