The auditions in San Francisco weren't for the tour necessarily. Whenever there's a Hairspray audition, you are auditioning for all the companies of Hairspray. As far as who's leaving the tour when the contract expires on September 5th, I'm not at liberty to say. I would get my ass kicked and I'm a lover, not a fighter. However, there'll be some turnover which means we'll be in constant "rehearsal mode" when the tour is in LA, so as to have it ready for it's 2nd year on the road. Can you believe the 1st year is almost over? "Time flies when you're........"

jim, a little indecisive about your icon today?
Broadway Legend Joined: 5/18/03
LOL. I think it's a very nice icon.
Looks like the Hairspray company will be busy in LA!
I wonder if there are any wisps of a plan for a second national company anytime in the future......
now, to keep on topic.......
I am REALLY hoping Sandra is the next tour cast member to make it to NYC, whether it be as Penny, or a Penny cover (she be a dynamite -- no pun -- Amber as well).
And I think it would be nice to see Jim take over the baton when Lon decides to depart the pit.

Someone needs to tell me why in Hairspray, Link knows Motormouth and says hi and everything - "always nice to see you Miss Motormouth" -but he doesnt seem to know who Seaweed is when they meet and gets weirded out at that encounter?
Mistress- How many times have you seen the show?
Mistress - That was a great observation about Link, Motormouth and Seaweed. I'm gonna have to start asking questions now and get you the answer.
As for my icon, what do you mean? Phantom's is a bit pornographic, eh?
BroadwayGuy2 - That was very sweet of you to say.

I think ive seen the show 27 times... I think. Something around there.
Jim- I hope you can find me an answer! I started asking the cast awhile back if they thought there was anything to the fact that none of the black ensemble members have their character names used in the script even though they have names. Was it done for emphasis? Was it an oversight or coincidence? I wouldnt just start dancing and rallying with a bunch of unnamed people. "This is my sister, little Inez (and this is Thad and ...)" Someone told me that we're supposed to believe that the dodge ball game is a special school wide event... otherwise that wouldnt make much sense either.
Yeah Ive definitely seen the show too much.
As for your icon, I just happened to check this topic a few times today while you must have been changing it. I like the tat!

What does Matty Fresh say?
Funny how Phantom uses an icon like that with no interruption...However, I used one of MYSELF far less revealing and our lovely moderators deleted it....TWICE
Who and the hell is Matty Fresh?
Mistress - I cannot wait to investigate your observations.
Goodnight from the left coast.
I never saw Winokur, but Carly Jibson was phenomenal in the role. I saw it with her and McKean, and the roof definitely came off. It's still a blockbuster show, thanks in gigantic part to Jibson's charm and talent. I simply can't imagine Tracy being played better.
The nasty comments on her performance are totally unjustified in my opinion. And if she was curt at the stage door one night, maybe she had a cold. Maybe it was her time of the month. Can't a performer EVER BE HUMAN with you people???

*gasp* matty fresh is matt morrison... its his nickname.

One of teh things that I LOVE about Carly is that when she steps on teh stage, she OWNS teh stage.. and you can tell that SHE is the star.
My theory on the names is that trying to include every name would be cheesey and would seem very "worked in". What should they do? Add a 'roll call' to the finale? The white kids have their names used as part of the "Corny Collins Show". Not reality.
Well, BillyWeeds I assume you were directing your comments at me since I was the one who said I didn't care for the performance. In the future, why don't you give me a list of who I can and can't like so than my opinions will be "justified".
The fact is that I did not like Jibson in the role. I just didn't. Her accent(s) were incredibly distracting and she does need to pick one and stick with it. If you liked her in the role, I'm thrilled for you.
Mistress - When I rehearse with Matt in a few weeks can I call him Matty Fresh? Will he know what I'm referring to?
Matt G - Perhaps you did see Carly on an "off" night. We all know that everyone has them. Maybe you'll have an oppotunity to see her again. Having done 250 shows with her on the tour, I can say without hesitation that she is tremendously talented. As far as I know, the only "accent" she uses is that of her native Muskegan, Michigan where they all kinda sound like they're from Fargo......and that's something that comes out naturally....You should hear her after a few beers though....HA! (joking) She's too young to drink beer, right?
Anyway, cheers to all. It's a lovely day in San Francisco today.
I very may well have seen her on an off night. As I said before, she was very short with the young girls who were excited to see her after the show. Maybe it was just a bad day for her.

If you are having a bad day, you don't want to deal with annoying fok, do ya? LOL. I feel sorry for Tracy Jai Edwards! There was a whole group of staright teenaged boys (at Hairspray!!!) waiting to accost her at the stage door!
and Jim, one is never too young to drink!.. OOPS.

Matt G - Thanks for the reply.
BG2 - That Tracy Jai Edwards is my little sister. I've watched her break hearts since we were kids.
Mistress: It's never said that they don't know each other it's more of a he's not my race and not my elder so I don't have to be extra nice to him type thing. When they see each other in the school yard they "how ya doin" kind of thing people who know each other but aren't comfortable with each other who react that why to, they just become friendly later on.
PennyLou - That was always my take on it too. However, the question must be offically answered.
Marc? - ANSWER PLEASE

It really depends on how that scene is played I guess. I might have come to that conclusion too but the 'how ya doin' from Link tends to be said before he even notices that the person hes being introduced to is black- thats why its followed by the awkwardness. I never got the impression that they know each other. If Link looked at him then said how ya doin then looked around, it might read like 'i hope no one saw me saying hi to the black kid' but thats not how its done. As I remember it seems more like 'wow I wasnt expecting Tracys friend Seaweed to be black.' Id agree that Link was being nice to an elder he had seen around the station but if he had seen Motormouth around, even though they clearly tape on different days, then I still wonder why Link doesnt know Seaweed. It could be argued I guess that he knew him around school but didnt know his nam hence his shock when Tracy introduces him... but thats a lot of reading into one line of the script. I always thought Links stand on the issue was driven mostly by self involvement and lack of exposure, not by actual prejudices which is why Link showing not qualms about saying hi to Motormouth is important...
And Jim, you can definitely call him Matty Fresh, when we set up his website we got two domains- one is mattmorrison.net and the other: mattyfresh.com - hes had the nickname ever since he was in a mock boy band called Fresh Step with Jeremy Kushnier.
Damn, I was just chatting with Shaiman online and forgot to ask him. Anyway, MattyFresh it is. LOL
Tonight starts a week of reviews for the new Hairspray company on B-way. Good luck to them.

btw, i do realize that its not general practice for the ensemble to have their names stated in shows, i just thought it was interesting in a show that makes such a point to name every single character, the only ones that dont have their names said in the script are all black... stooie is never said either but that actor is two characters.
i also wanted to point out that chester gregory also noticed this in the script and sometimes just throws in their names randomly...
