I was wondering, what cast did they use? Was it the original West End cast or did they recast the whole thing?
Also, I remember in the early 80s when the show was first coming out in the UK they had a Rum Tum Tugger music video that they even showed on MTV to promote it. Does anyone else remember that? And Terrence Mann made a small cameo in the begining...
The 1998 TV version of CATS (aka DVD/home video version) contained an international cast composed of performers from various worldwide casts of CATS from that timeframe. Though it was indeed filmed/shot in London, it was not at the theatre housing the London production of CATS.
The link is full cast info and everything else.
Also, Terrence Mann is the one playing the Rum Tum Tugger in that early 80's promo video. Charlotte d'Amboise (his wife) loves bringing this up when she discusses both of their respective theatrical credits.

Thanks for the info!
I found the music video!
CATS
the music video was used to promote the Broadway show. Terrence Mann plays the Rum Tum Tugger for the entire video, but I suppose seeing him without the make-up is a cameo of sorts.

Haven't you heard? Will Smith's father is making the movie. Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland have signed on.

Oh...well...I feel dumb.
Actually it's Sidney Poitier who's making the movie, Stockard and Donald are contracted to play human extras, and if we are all really nice to Will Smith, we may get to be extras too!

I think it would be teally funny to make a movie using actual cats, with their mouths moving (done with CGI technology, as in BABE and CHARLOTTE'S WEB)and all the choregraphy, also accomplished via computer.

I tried to leave but Rumpleteazer held me down, and.......I was raped by Mr. Mistoffelees!
Hey Stalker, thanks for posting that video. Hard to believe that "Cats" was once considered edgy enough for MTV! That video is priceless. Man, I don't miss the 80's one bit.

I think at one time they were thinking about making an animated version.
Why did this movie delete the Growltiger material?
That's what I always wondered, Goth. That's the only part in the whole show I actually like and they go off and cut it out completely. Bah!
OMG you guys, Stalker pointing us to that video on the *site that shall go nameless* led to another gem. You must go there and search for "Russian Rum Tum Tugger MTV" to see the Russian equivalent. snicker..
From "Six Degrees of Separation" by John Guare (I know that it has been referenced, but someone has to quote from it, if not verbatim), "You saw Cats and you hated it. You said it was an all time low in theatre going. You said that Aesculus did not invent drama so that we can find out which chorus boy goes to Kitty-Kat Heaven..."
