Illya Darling - 2 CD'S
I am amused that ILLYA DARLING is going to be released at some point. This 1967 show received 1 favorable review, 1 mixed review, 1 unfavorable review and 3 pans. While out of town its famous pit conductor Lehman Engel bad-mouthed the show to the press and was fired. It was to be Engel's final Broadway bound show. He then concentrated on his BMI Musical Workshops to promote the writing of musicals, an organization that is still very active today.
Why anyone would be interested in a CD of this bomb is beyond me. I guess it would appeal to the same people who bought the CD of the infamous, unworthy NICK & NORA.

I saw both Illya & N/N
Illya was modestly entertaining but Zorba was better. While N/N was a mess, the score was quite good & very listenable. No Strouse score is bad.
I doubt Illya will ever be released especially in this economy.

I can tell you that another never before released on CD cast album is coming in late March/early April. Yes I can.

^He's Bruce Kimmell (1 'l' or 2?), he's pretty reliable when it comes to these things. (That isn't meant sarcastically)
oh wow, didn't know that!
well can't wait to hear what it is!!
I LOVE that DRG reissues these out of print cast recordings! It's wonderful for those of us who collect & treasure cast recordings, but weren't around to get the 1st issue.
Funny, though, how it also makes picking up the out of print ones harder because each time I find one, I stop and think, "Gee, I wonder if DRG might reissue this. Should I save the money and take the risk?" =)
bk-
what a tease! Can you at least give us a hint?

I'm not Bruce Kimmel, but I wonder if the real Bruce Kimmel provided a clue in his post. In the last three words, perhaps? A certain superstar did a '70s revival of a '60s show, and that cast album has never appeared on CD. Hmmmmm....??

You know, as I wrote Yes, I Can I thought someone might think Sammy. It's not :)
I do happen to know about this title since it will be on my label. I do occasionally know what I'm releasing. I can also tell you it will be a limited edition (as was Evening Primrose, the TV soundtrack) but only 1000 copies. If you're not on the Kritzerland mailing list you might want to be - our e-mail blasts will always alert you of new titles.
So, drop us a line at kritzerland at aol dot com and we'll put you on the list.

As a long time collector (30+ years) I learned long ago that no recordings is worth the inflated prices dealers try to charge for "rare" items.
We have seen some of the top rarities of the cast album field get reissued on CD including Jerry Herman's PARADE (once a $200 item on Lp) and the Ann Southern TV cast of LADY IN THE DARK. Since CD's can be easily copied, the rarity factor really only applies to hardcore collectors who must have the original release with all the packaging.
Judging by what I read on BWW and elsewhere, many younger listeners don't care about the package: they just want the music, and CD-R copies will suffice.
The top rarities right on CD now are WHOOP-UP (Polydor) and KWAMINA (Broadway Angel) and both were deleted within about 2 years of being released. KWAMINA has been rumored for reissue by DRG but no one wants to touch WHOOP-UP - even to make it available as a download. Other hard to get titles include the original London cast of CHILDEREN OF EDEN (a pressing defect has made most existing copies unplayable. IF anyone has a copy that does play you would be well advised to make a back-up copy.) Also the Judi Dench revival cast of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was recorded under such a restricted agreement that it cannot be reissued and the label that did release it has gone out of business, but I have been told that the tracks are available on a budget CD but it is not called A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. (The title is vague something like "Judi Dench sings Sondheim")
Aside from this small handful of titles, most everything else can be found with a bit of searching on E-bay or Amazon or downloaded from Soulseek.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
"Whoop-Up" and "Kwamina" are both fascinating to listen to. I'm so glad I bought them when the CDs came out!
And I do love original LP packaging, catalog numbers, comparing the fold-out to the flat covers, the mono vs. stereo, etc. Ah, record collecting isn't what it used to be.........

Interesting though this discussion of Whoop-Up and Kwamina might be, bk's post promises the release of something that has NEVER been on CD! (And I say complaints about high prices for out-of-print rarities are out of place here.) It could be something fabulous like Jimmy or Anya, or it could be the Podunk High School production of Scandals Of 1946. Either way we true fans should be grateful. And we are, bk.
So, you think it's SDJ's revival of STWIWTGO?

I did, but bk has disabused me of that notion. (See bk's post above.)
Was "Bravo, Giovanni" ever on CD? That's all I got. lol

Yes, Bravo Giovanni is on a DRG CD.

Shrek has pushed their date back about 5 times over the past two weeks! What's up with that?! Last time I checked it was at March 24. That was only three days ago!

I think it's fabulous, but that's just me :)
