My answer to everything:
CATHERINE ZETA -JONES>>>>>
Can you hear the belt on..If he walked into my life..
the poor woman is probaly itching to sing and dance but NO ONE IS ASKING HER..
and might I add who says MAME has to be 48 years old...
Why not 38.....

But Anth, isn't Zeta-Jones closer to 48 than 38??? ![]()
I still think Goldie Hawn would be perfection!

Goldie would be great as well..
I think Cher just won't work in this show......and it does'nt suit Barbra as well..
I think the only reason those names come up is because they are singers who won oscars and are past the age of 50 and are true superstars...
so's Clint Eastwood but i would'nt cast him as Mame..
I'd rather see Cher as Mama Rose ..
what about REBA....she can fix the accent enough to do it...that broad can do anything........

Sparky I assume you've seen the show...
Or seen the 1983 boot*** with Lansbury..
If you have not, then you have no idea how awful Barbra or Cher would be in this role....

....and you really think Cher would be good for this? Or Barbra?
Where's the lightness? The sense of madcap fun?
Light and Madcap are two things I don't associate with those two...funny yes...but not this kind of fun....
Goldie would be ideal...
then Reba....

Posted: 1/23/04 at 12:27pmOur Ms. Hawn has proven in movies that she can play both classy and wacky at the same time...the quality that makes Mame...well...Mame! And as evidenced in EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU, she can deliver a torch song and move with grace and ease.

Goldie has a sense of lightness to her that works...
and Reba would be so perky and then in a flash she would show her heart breaking.. just like in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and that would be great as well...the accent is fixable!
Could someone PLEASE cancel that TV SHOW!!

Wouldn't Reba be wonderful in THE PAJAMA GAME or UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN??? I just love her!
And Cher would make a wonderful Vera in PAL JOEY...with the hot hot hot Taye Diggs!
FRAN AND BARRIE! ARE YOU LISTENING????

Mame has always been one of those roles that more about charisma than vocal ability. The peformer has to have the stage technique and physical timing worthing of a Noel Coward comedy.
Somebody like Glenn Close (or a young Maggie Smith) could handle this role much better than Cher.

CLOSE! How old should this MAME be? Close is 56!
...remember?
They should still want to burn a plantation down for her....
I don't get casting her as a 55-60 year old?WHY? Look what happened when they cast Lucy? Someone's broken hipped grandmom knocking the boys dead....Hello!
She should be a hot 40 year old vamp...aka Zeta-Jones!
Does anyone know how old Lansbury was when she did it!
45! 4 5 ! and she looked 37.....

I agree with Mister Matt.... Dixie could do that part.
It is amazing how we are typcasting in terms of what the previous MAMES looked or sounded like.
I do believe that we should get Amy Sederis to be Gooch! That would be a hoot--

Hmmmm...all these discussions about the performer's age playing Mame.
I've never really considered Mame to be a sexy vampish type of role. More champagne and crystal...
In that regard, Goldie would probably a better choice than Ms. Zeta-Jones.
I love to see Debra Monk take a stab at the role, although she doesn't have the name recognition.
A footnote: Rosalind Russell, who I consider the definative Mame Dennis, was born 1907 and filmed the movie in 1958. She was over 50 at the time.

Russell's is still the definitive portrayal of the character. The MAME musical script hits the glamor but cuts a lot of the humor; Mame is straight man to both Vera and Gooch in the musical whereas the Russell character carries the comedy. If you doubt this, compare the scripts. Lansbury made this all sophisticated, the story of the triumph of dry wit and chic, but it really wasn't a laugh-fest. Pretty much anyone mentioned here could carry it off, but I doubt that a TV production -- looking for demographics and ratings -- would plug in a 60 year old like Carter.
You know who'd re-ivent the role of Vera? Queen Latifah. Just change a few lines to make her more of a ex-Cotton Club type who became a star, and she could sizzle.

I'm not saying that MAME HAS to be younger than 45 but why can't she be ..
..who says...
..why not do something different from the other versions...
If not Zeta-Jones how 'bout Jamie Lee Curtis...I hear she sings!and lord knows she's box office now after Freaky Friday ..
Or Parker Posey...
Jessica Simpson as Gooch would be ideal!
