Parker Posey! Now I like that!

Catherine Zeta-Jones is a bit too much of a sex bomb...she may have the talent, but she the wrong physical type.

Mame is sexy because she witty, charming, slight nutty and extremely intelligent....

But can't the character be all of that and still have a great rack?

I don't understand. Why does it have to be one or the other...not both?

LOL!

I know..I mean why can't we have a "new take" on this where MAME is young and is forced to deal with an 8 year old...

Why does MAME have to have saddlebags for hooters!??? Updated On: 1/23/04 at 02:17 PM

I suppose that Mame could have a "great rack." However, I'm always reminded that the story is a memory piece of Patrick's.

My icon is a photo of the incredible actress Virgina Leith in her most famous role in "The Brain That Wouldn't Die."

Unfortunately, even she's too old to play Mame.

Although, it would be a rather interesting concept to have Mame portrayed as a decapitated head. Not that many costumes, but plenty of hats!

Don't tell me 72 is too OLD to play MAME!????

Cher would be great. And she is the kind of name that would make it into a tv event. However; Cher is about to embark on the European leg of her extremely popular and profitable never ending farewell tour. By the time she is available even Cher mighgt be to old .OOps. I forgot... she could just go in for a refresher nip and tuck. Cher would be FABULOUS!

I think this is all crazy!
I dont know much about Mame- only knowing "We Need a Little Christmas" and I believe that Angela Lansbury played the leading role, but Cher? Wow.

She's old..

She sings..

and she's acted...

and she'd give her eye teeth to do it!

What more do ya need!

When I think of Mame, I think of an eccentric and extravagant women played with a light touch. Cher is more of a steamroller personality. I can't see her playing anything with a light touch. I don't see her offering advice to Patrick as how to enjoy life, but more as tossing out survival tips to keep from getting killed.

..and with Cher...

There's the whole "ho-jo-jo" factor

Ever since Will and Grace, everytime I see that woman I think:

flip hair and go "ho-jo-jo"

Do we really want a Mame who goes:

"We need a little Christmas - ho-jo-jo"

Of course with Diana Ross, we would have

"We need a little Christmas yeah-heah!"

I believe that Bette Midler would be a good Mame. She would bring back some of the madcap feeling that is needed. Throw in Whoopi Goldberg as Vera and you have a movie everyone will want to see.

Does anyone doubt that Kristin C. already has Gooch in the bag?

Folks, youo are all forgetting that Mame Dennis is a very elegant and sophisticated lady. The more elegant and sophisticated she is, the funnier she is. Both Roz Russell and Angela Lansbury had those qualities and that's what made thier Mames so exceptional. Greer Garson was a great Mame, as was Bea Lillie. Lucille Ball TRIED to be elegant and sophisticated and it didnt work.

Dixie Carter....excellent choice

Glenn Close.....maybe

Diana Rigg......you bet!

Helen Mirren....another good one

Blythe Danner...good, and she could probably handle this score

...and what about Tammy Grimes as Vera Charles?

I agree that Mame should be sophisticated. But they are going to pitch this to television. In order to catch the "Friends / Will & Grace" crowd, they are going to have to put more humor into it.

WHO the hell is gonna pay out 25 million to make a TV movie of MAME starring Danner or Rigg or Carter!

Would you invest half of your weekly paycheck into it? Fair question ! I wouldn't!

and what sponser would buy air time!

Not a soul!...

You need to at least TRY to make this play in Duluth...or your sunk...

again, I think with these choices on this thread, people forget the millions it takes to make a film like this, even for TV, and how you have to CONVINCE more than half of America to tune in to it!!

Would the film CHICAGO ever have grossed 180 million without that genius publicity campaign that made cowboys in Montana feel they were missing out if they did'nt get to see the film...?

You need to do something and unlike a film (where if you hate it they still have your 10 bucks)... the minute they don't like what they see on TV, they change the channel.

When one sees it that way one gets how Diana Rigg and Blythe Danner would never be options!

I'm not picking on Dollypop...you know I loves ya!

I agree with Voiceanth. It's all about cutting risks, anticipated demographics and ratings. Many ladies mentioned above are worthy of Encores or the Roundabout. TV requires "event"-like name.

Of the singing top-ten TV show stars, Megan Mullaly could actually be viable as Vera. But I think Mame must be a movie star slumming in TV to pull numbers. It isn't like "Annie" -- the show itself is the star -- it's a true vehicle, the event is an outre star in lots of high drag. It's always a show about costume changes, remember.

Cher's rock diva temperament is actually useful; her world-weary self-absorption would capture the narcissim, and the indifference to suddenly having a child, which of course makes the woman falling for little Patrick more touching. You need a sense of a lady who never expects to spend 5 minutes with a kid. Mame never works when you start with an already too-warm personality. She's actually a chilly woman. If not, she's not funny.

How about Judy Davis as Vera? Zoe Caldwell might have been good too, though a little old now (for Vera).

Cheri O Teri (sp?) for Gooch.

LOTS of great ideas here. Love the idea of Reba or Cher as Mame & Cher as Vera in PAL JOEY. Love Barbra to bits , but the Barbra of 2003 is not the Babs of 1973 (when she would have been wonderful...IF should could have dealt with the possibility of Gooch - hmmm..Madeline Kahn..or Vera stealing the film away from her...HA!). She could sing the hell out of that score, but she's too somber and stately now to pull it off.

I like the idea of Christine Ebersole as MAME and would have loved to have seen her version at Papermill Playhouse some years ago. Does anyone remember what reviews she recieved?

If not Ebersole, then Michele Lee..but on Broadway.
