Posted: 7/14/05 at 4:13pmRobbie, I just found your BWW Bio and your website. I'm very impressed. I'd read many of your posts but had no idea we had such a talented and experienced actor in our midst. I'm 3000 miles too far away to see your production of CC, though. I could kick myself for having missed Chad Allen's original in L.A. a few years back. What was I thinking? In any case, CONGRATULATIONS to you and BREAK A LEG!

It was really first rate -- almost miraculously so considering they only had 6 rehearsals (and the lead missed half of them doing Rosie's cruise). The ensemble of 13 was flawless top to bottom (I'm amazed just by the fact that they were all off book and almost letter perfect, but beyond that, they all gave wonderfully nuanced and layered performances) and the direction was outstanding (it was well blocked and well-paced). And Robbie, of course was terrific in a series of roles (ask him about his truck driver character -- simply hysterical). It's too bad that there are only two more performances. I could definitely see this production having a run off-Broadway (apparently there's been some talk of that perhaps happening in the future).

Last night's performance of CORPUS CHRISTI was one of the most powerful evenings I've spent in a theater in a very long time, simply brilliant on all levels.
The staging was dramatic and inspired in the passionate hands of this gifted ensemble under the solid direction of Adam Fitzgerald, his use of each actors natural strengths brought Terrence McNally's already fascinating and spiritual text to new levels of emotional and up to date clarity. I found myself getting lost in the story from the opening moments as "John" (John the Baptist-Rob Maitner) calls each actor by his name, splashes him with water, christens him with the name of his character, and says, “I baptize you and recognize your divinity as a human being. I adore you.” This ritual has an overpowering emotional effect on you as an audience member and it's to this production's credit that it never let's you lose that feeling for the duration of the performance.
Attention must be paid to the company of actors playing the apostles , Agustine Welles, Robb Leigh Davis ,Andy Hoey, Gavin Starr Kendall, Dan Kolodny,Gregory Marcel, Joe Mihalchick, Michael Pesce, Thom Rivera and Patrick Zeller..each one brings a depth to their characters that was a wonder to watch (and knowing how little time they had for full rehearsals-a true miracle was performed indeed!).
Aaron Lohr's Judas was a primal force, full of anger and love for Joshua (Jesus), never allowing himself to fully surrender his heart to what he "must" do in betraying the person he loves, Lohr is truly one of the best young actors working today, he stalked the stage like a jungle cat, always near tears at where his journey would end and always with his powerful hands almost at the audiences throat with rage. BRAVO!
Lucas Steele makes for the perfect embodiment of McNally's vision of a reborn Christ, he is at once stunningly beautiful and fragile and then forceful and haunted when dealing with the conflicted knowledge of who he truly is. this is an all too human Son Of God and Steele navigates the role with truth and humor and finally inspired understanding of his importance to the world. I've always been happy to watch him lend able support to John Tartaglia in his splendid AD-Liberty shows, but it was a true thrill to see him head the company as Joshua, he's simply wonderful.
And now to our own Robbiej, what can be said about him when he's on stage?
Well for one his is that rare gift to the theatre, a true theatricality born from God-Given talent and a sharp wit, he's always alive in his skills when engaged with his fellow actors, yet deeply connected to every person sitting in the audience…few have it, Nathan Lane comes to mind when I think of that power. Robbie translates McNally's words with a fluid and emotional care that exposes the heart and soul of the play, the meaning after all is to "love one another" and his John starts the evening by framing that goal with his first words and ends it by his tearful final statement, look, I know I always fall in "shill" territory when I comment on his performance, but I'm never being dishonest, he's a divine energy when on stage and in this production of CORPUS CHRISTI he fairly shines….and YES, his truck driver was a high-wired delight!
McNally set this version of the Passion Play in small town 1950's Texas and thanks to everyone involved with kef productions (special shouts to Lori Prince and Michael Poignand), I saw that city come to vivid life and watched as all the desire and pain born of love came alive at the Bouwerie Lane Theater last night, thank you all for the gift that is great theater.
There are only two more performances, please go if you can, you'll be richly rewarded.

Last night was very special, and it meant a lot having some of my BWW family there!
This cast and my dear director have turned this into one the best (and quickest) experiences I've ever had in the theatre.

You have one LAST chance to catch robbie and the whole cast of Corpus Christi tomorrow night. As was reminded (though debated) they rehearsed only 7 (or was it 6) times, and pull together a gripping, beautifully acted performance. Please, please, please catch this...
Oh, and robbie? TOUCH ME!!!
